Venita Peyton Challenges Nancy McFarlane

With just two days left to file, Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane has some competition.

Real estate broker Venita Peyton filed Wednesday in the race for mayor.

Peyton, a Republican, ran in 2011 for for the District 4 Wake Board of Education seat, but lost to Keith Sutton.

Peyton is a resident of southeast Raleigh.

McFarlane is finishing up her first term as mayor after serving as a representative for District A.

Other City Council Races
As of Wednesday, other candidates for the fall election include:

Independent incumbent Randy Stagner will face Republican Wayne Maiorano for District A.

Republican incumbent John Odom has two challengers for his seat in District B. Newcomers Brian Fitzsimmons and Sam Smith are both registered Democrats.

Independent Racquel Williams has filed for District C, held by Democrat incumbent Eugene Weeks. Williams also ran for this seat in 2011. Read her 2011 voter guide profile here.

Incumbent Thomas Crowder, a Democrat, has filed to run for another term in District D. Challenger Jim Kemp Sherron has announced his candidacy, but had not filed as of Wednesday.

Unaffiliated District E incumbent Bonner Gaylord has announced his candidacy, but had not filed as of Wednesday. At this time, he would be running unopposed.

Republican Jason Spriggs is looking for one of two At-Large seats held by Democrats Mary-Ann Baldwin and Russ Stephenson. At press time, Baldwin had not filed, but she has announced her candidacy.

The filing period ends at noon Friday.
