Driving is somewhat easy, right? Rule No. 1: follow the rules and Rule No. 2: don\u2019t be a jerk. I thought I was doing all of that one day when I casually turned right on red. Sure, I saw the police officer, but we all turn right on red all the the time so I didn\u2019t think twice.<\/p>\n

Until he pulled me over. \u201cDidn\u2019t you see the sign?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

Uh, NO. I don\u2019t generally break the law <\/span>directly in front<\/span><\/i> of police officers. (Or at all, really.) \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The lovely officer let me go. Perhaps he thought my embarrassment at being pulled over on the corner of Glenwood and Peace Street was enough punishment. (It was. I\u2019ll never do that again.) <\/span><\/p>\n

You can avoid this embarrassment by checking out this list of places you cannot turn right on right in Raleigh. These are the 5 I found a bit surprising. Also, for those of you who forget Rule No. 2, check this list before honking at me, OK?\"norightonred\" <\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Glenwood Avenue heading south, right onto Peace Street in downtown. Yep. That\u2019s what got me. Now that I think about it, the turn is a bit awkward there \u2026 <\/span>
    \n<\/span>Bonus:<\/b> For the love of all Raleigh drivers, PLEASE do not attempt to turn left from Peace coming west up the hill onto Glenwood heading south. It\u2019s illegal. And dangerous. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Whitaker Mill Road, eastbound, at Atlantic Avenue. This one bugs me because I see people do it all the time and it always ends with a driver nearly rear-ending the person who turned. The hill and curve at Atlantic Avenue are such that you really can\u2019t see much coming around that corner. If you\u2019re on Whitaker Mill, just hang tight. <\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Northbound Boylan Avenue no right-on-red onto Peace Street. This was one submitted by a Twitter fan. Maybe he got pulled over? This is that intersection by the McDonald\u2019s. Given the traffic there and the hard right angles, I\u2019m grateful for this one. <\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Garner Road and Tryon Road. This one was submitted by a listener. \u201cIt seems pretty wide open to me and I don\u2019t even think these roads experience heavy traffic, in my experience. I\u2019m surprised I haven\u2019t gotten caught here!\u201d she said. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Boylan Avenue, northbound, at Morgan Street. There are a lot of troublesome spots on Boylan when it comes to visibility, but this one doesn\u2019t seem as bad.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Some Special Cases
    \n<\/b>In some cases, you can\u2019t turn right on red, but only during certain time periods. The city also has a list of school zones in which you cannot turn right on red. Please, look for the sign before you go. <\/span><\/p>\n

    No Left Turn on Red
    \n<\/b>No, you cannot turn left on red. No matter what.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Many drivers believe it\u2019s OK to turn left on red if you\u2019re turning from a one-way street onto another one-way street. The rules vary in all 50 states, but in North Carolina, it\u2019s illegal no matter what. So don\u2019t do it. <\/span><\/p>\n
