{"id":108,"date":"2011-06-17T17:47:27","date_gmt":"2011-06-17T17:47:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/?p=108"},"modified":"2018-04-27T15:14:56","modified_gmt":"2018-04-27T19:14:56","slug":"new-greenway-connections-multiply-options-for-biking-running-and-walking-in-downtown-raleigh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/parks-green-space\/new-greenway-connections-multiply-options-for-biking-running-and-walking-in-downtown-raleigh","title":{"rendered":"New Greenway Connections Multiply Options for Biking, Running and Walking in Downtown Raleigh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Have you ever noticed anyone in a bad mood on the Greenway?\u00a0 Neither have I.\u00a0 It\u2019s just miles of smiles!\u00a0 So I\u2019m always excited when I hear of plans to increase those miles&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This week, I attended the lunch time forum at the Urban Design Center to get an update on the latest plans for Raleigh\u2019s greenway grid.\u00a0 As a Downtown resident, I\u2019m particularly interested in any new routes that make it possible for me to enjoy the Greenways without having to get in my car first.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Until Now<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"full-image-float-left ssNonEditable\"><img alt=\"\" src=\"\/storage\/ParksGreenway.JPG?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1308333751192\" \/><\/span>As background to those new to the Greenway, I posted a <a href=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/home\/2010\/4\/15\/from-downtown-to-umstead-a-greenway-guide-for-bikers-and-run.html\">Greenway Guide<\/a> a year ago that included a detailed map of the only Greenway connection into Downtown Raleigh from the south, which links up with the Walnut Creek and Rocky Branch Greenways.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, I talked about a vital <a title=\"One Small Step for a Vital Greenway Connection \u2014 One Wrong Step for the Environment? So Argue Property Owners.\" href=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/transportation-parking\/one-small-step-for-a-vital-greenway-connection-one-wrong-step-for-the-environment-so-argue-property-owners\">connection to Umstead State Park<\/a>, where issues with neighbors and an adjacent quarry were holding up a necessary right of way for the 1.3 mile link to the Crabtree Creek Greenway.\u00a0 Sig Hutchinson (Mr. Greenway) has been working on this issue for the city, and it appears a solution has been reached.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Now Two New Connections<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This week I learned some other exciting news about two new Greenway connections into Downtown Raleigh.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>First, a more convenient connection into Downtown from the west will start at the Convention Center, travel along Cabarrus Street through Boylan Heights (along sidewalks), and link up with the Rocky Branch Greenway near the Central Prison along Western Boulevard.<\/p>\n<p>Second, a <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/ms?ie=UTF8&amp;hl=en&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=202405474391547403921.00049412159d09e612721&amp;ll=35.810505,-78.623056&amp;spn=0.053526,0.070724&amp;z=14\">connection going north from downtown<\/a> will link up with the Crabtree Creek\u00a0 Greenway from Raleigh Boulevard.\u00a0 This one has been talked about for a while, but I\u2019m hearing that the route has now been worked out.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"thumbnail-image-float-left ssNonEditable\"><a href=\"javascript:showFullImage('\/display\/ShowImage?imageUrl=%2Fstorage%2FDowntown%20GreenwayMaps.jpg%3F__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION%3D1308335156134',1220,1350);\"><img style=\"width: 250px;\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/storage\/thumbnails\/3923897-12767899-thumbnail.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1308335526761\" \/><\/a><span class=\"thumbnail-caption\" style=\"width: 250px;\">Click to enlarge<\/span><\/span>Here is a map showing where all the new greenways extensions will connect into Downtown Raleigh, including the House Creek Trail Greenway now being built, which provides the long sought linkage of the Crabtree Trail and the Reedy Creek Trail Greenways.\u00a0 Use <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/ms?msa=0&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;ll=35.81322,-78.675499&amp;spn=0.107049,0.141449&amp;z=13&amp;msid=202405474391547403921.00049a8981c97a0949a55\">this link<\/a> to view additional map details.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Look for These Other New Connections<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There were also several other important greenway connections underway.\u00a0 You can go to the City\u2019s website and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raleighnc.gov\/content\/PRecDesignDevelop\/Documents\/Maps\/SystemMaps\/CapitalAreaGreenwaySystemMap.pdf\">download<\/a> the updated maps.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>East Fork Mine Creek Trail Greenway extending north from Shelley Lake<\/li>\n<li>Neuse River Trail Greenway extending north to Falls Lake Dam<\/li>\n<li>Walnut Creek Trail Greenway extending east to the Neuse River<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><em>Note: The Crabtree Creek, Walnut Creek, and Neuse River Greenway will all eventually connect at Anderson Point Park.\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At a time when so much funding is being cut, I appreciate the investment our city government is putting into residents\u2019 quality of life.\u00a0 This directly impacts our mental and physical health.\u00a0 It builds community.\u00a0 It\u2019s a sure fire way to increase smiles!<\/p>\n<p>(To see all past articles from this blog about greenways, click on the <a href=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/home\/category\/parks-green-space\">Parks &amp;
