{"id":131,"date":"2012-01-23T15:14:34","date_gmt":"2012-01-23T15:14:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/?p=131"},"modified":"2018-04-27T15:14:47","modified_gmt":"2018-04-27T19:14:47","slug":"best-beautifying-emerging-spaces-together-look-for-our-first-storefront-art-at-the-hue-on-februarys-first-friday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/artmusicentertainment\/best-beautifying-emerging-spaces-together-look-for-our-first-storefront-art-at-the-hue-on-februarys-first-friday","title":{"rendered":"BEST (Beautifying Emerging Spaces Together): Look for our first storefront art at the Hue on February\u2019s First Friday!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><a href=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/BEST_Website1.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[131]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-257\" title=\"BEST_Website1\" src=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/BEST_Website1-271x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"271\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/BEST_Website1-271x300.jpg 271w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/BEST_Website1.jpg 479w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 271px) 100vw, 271px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In October, I wrote a <a href=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/home\/2011\/10\/12\/share-your-vision-for-downtown-raleigh-turn-empty-storefront.html\"><span>blog post<\/span><\/a> for the Downtown Living Advocates asking:<\/p>\n<p><span><em>Are you an artist, teacher or volunteer, who shares a vision for residents creating community through creativity?\u00a0 Do you own a vacant downtown property that is ripe for a face lift?\u00a0 <\/em><\/span><span><em>Together we can transform sidelined windows into magnets for inspiration and activity.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Two months later, I\u2019m ready to introduce BEST, a team of Downtown Raleigh residents, business leaders and artists who have come together with the mission of <strong>B<\/strong>EAUTIFYING <strong>E<\/strong>MERGING <strong>S<\/strong>PACES <strong>T<\/strong>OGETHER.\u00a0 Our vision has morphed and grown according to the imagination and individual skills of each person who has joined our table, often over coffee at the <a href=\"http:\/\/wilmoorecafe.com\/\"><span>Wilmoore Cafe<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 This seems fitting, somehow.\u00a0 It reminds me of my dad perched along the drug store counter drinking coffee with his friends.\u00a0 I feel the same kind of community in this group, as each person holds up his corner of the conversation.<\/p>\n<p><span>Let me describe some of the people around the table.\u00a0 There\u2019s one who is drawn there by his advocacy for all people living downtown, including the ones currently challenged by homelessness.\u00a0 He knows that this effort shapes their living room and calls them to consider how they might also transform the empty spaces in their lives.\u00a0 And it gives the creatively-oriented among his flock an opportunity to tell their stories through art.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Then there are the computer-savvy gurus of social media who are excited about applying their skills for an effort that affects the experience of every person who lives, visits and works downtown.
