{"id":1885,"date":"2014-04-11T08:41:06","date_gmt":"2014-04-11T12:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/?p=1885"},"modified":"2018-04-27T15:14:01","modified_gmt":"2018-04-27T19:14:01","slug":"bridge-to-raleighs-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/glenwood-south\/bridge-to-raleighs-future","title":{"rendered":"A Bridge to Raleigh&#8217;s Future: The Decision is Now!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here\u2019s a quiz:\u00a0 Guess where this is?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You rarely see people walking here.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s located just a few blocks from a commercial center and downtown entertainment district.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s within the downtown improvement district.<\/li>\n<li>The area is huge, with lots of potential<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Answer &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/mapsengine.google.com\/map\/edit?mid=zcqIpqVL-kVw.kLABu7s6jZlY\">see map<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the downtown revitalization has continued to move forward, an area like this could be expected to have attracted a lot of attention, yet developers avoid it.<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/cap_blvd2.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[1885]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1805\" alt=\"cap_blvd2\" src=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/cap_blvd2-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/cap_blvd2-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/cap_blvd2.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>A favorable bridge redesign offers to spark redevelopment<\/b><\/p>\n<p>With the bridge over Peace Street at its useful life, a forward-friendly redesign of the bridge could be a catalyst to redevelop this important area of downtown.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A \u00a0design referred to as the \u201cSquare Loop\u201d for integrating off-ramp bridge traffic would create a much needed street grid, giving a big boost to the redevelopment potential for the area. \u00a0NCDOT has been working with the city for years so this new design is consistent with the approved Capital Boulevard Plan, which envisions a new destination park \/ <a href=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/glenwood-south\/pigeon-house-branch-a-new-downtown-raleigh-waterway\">waterway<\/a> and brings Peace Street to a walkable urban form. \u00a0Both the city and state are in favor.<\/p>\n<p><b>With just weeks to decide, there\u2019s a catch.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This is the catch: An alternative bridge design can be done with much less cost ($11 million) as it is basically a copy of the bridge today.\u00a0 The details on the two options are laid out nicely on the <a href=\"http:\/\/dtraleigh.com\/2013\/11\/new-capital-boulevard-designs-out-status-quo-versus-new-connections\/\">Raleigh Connoisseur blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The city has the opportunity to select the \u201cSquare Loop\u201d bridge design, identified by NCDOT as the P5 alternative, but with construction of the bridge planned to start in just two years, the design must to be finalized soon.<\/p>\n<p><b>Decision must be made by <\/b><b>May 23rd.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The final public hearing is April 22nd (4-7pm) at the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts.<\/p>\n<p>The DLA encourages all residents to come to the public hearing and support the Square Loop (P5) bridge design.\u00a0 For more on this important decision, jump over to the Raleigh Connoisseur Blog to read their <a href=\"http:\/\/dtraleigh.com\/2014\/04\/decision-time-nears-final-public-meeting-capital-boulevard-bridge-design-april-22\/\">latest post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here\u2019s a quiz:\u00a0 Guess where this is?
