{"id":2079,"date":"2014-12-03T15:23:35","date_gmt":"2014-12-03T19:23:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/?p=2079"},"modified":"2018-04-27T15:13:48","modified_gmt":"2018-04-27T19:13:48","slug":"glenwood-souths-scarf-tree","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/glenwood-south\/glenwood-souths-scarf-tree","title":{"rendered":"Glenwood South&#8217;s &#8216;Scarf Tree&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/ScarfTree_collage-copy.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[2079]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2084 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/ScarfTree_collage-copy-300x235.jpg\" alt=\"ScarfTree_collage copy\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, December 3 at 9:30 knitters from Glenwood South gathered to finish wrapping more than a hundred scarves around one of the oldest and largest trees on the block at 201 Glenwood Avenue.\u00a0 This year it took two lifts to allow artists to reach branches that loom high over the two story Duncan-Parnell building, whose history on the street dates back to 1978, (when they were located at 400 Glenwood Ave.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>More than sixty knitters have participated in Glenwood South\u2019s second annual tree sweater project, this time attracting knitters from as far away as Hawaii, Texas and even Ontario.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0\u201cSweaters have been flowing in, sometimes made by mothers of Glenwood South residents, who have heard about the project,\u201d comments Donna Belt, project organizer, \u201cI was really surprised to find a box at my door this week, sent by one of last year\u2019s knitters, who has since moved out of the country.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But most of the scarves were made by community knitters who met at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saintsaviourcenter.org\" target=\"_blank\">St. Saviour\u2019s Center<\/a>\u00a0to stitch with seniors who were recipients of last year\u2019s tree sweater blankets.\u00a0 Inspired by the colorful statement of community shared with them, knitters at St. Saviors and Glenwood Towers determined that this year they would host the knitting and pass the scarves on to <a href=\"http:\/\/lovewins.info\" target=\"_blank\">Love Wins<\/a>, a ministry to the homeless led by Hugh Hollowell in the Glenwood South neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>Other additions this year include three large fiber sculptures created by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amandasnavely.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\">Amanda Snavely<\/a>, a 1996 graduate of NC State University College of Design, of KDA\u2019S Design.\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/SAM_0055.jpeg\" rel=\"lightbox[2079]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2091\" src=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/SAM_0055-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"SAM_0055\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/SAM_0055-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/SAM_0055.jpeg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The project was organized by the <a href=\"http:\/\/gsnc.raleighdla.com\" target=\"_blank\">Glenwood South Neighborhood Collaborative<\/a>, and in addition to all the knitters, was made possible by artist Amanda Snavely, St. Saviour\u2019s Center, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.duncan-parnell.com\" target=\"_blank\">Duncan-Parnell<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unitedarts.org\" target=\"_blank\">United Arts Council<\/a>, (whose volunteer Julia Mastropaolo helped at every step).\u00a0 Sponsorship for hanging the scarves provided by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.godowntownraleigh.com\/about\/about-dra\" target=\"_blank\">Downtown Raleigh Alliance<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/hamptoninn3.hilton.com\/en\/hotels\/north-carolina\/hampton-inn-and-suites-raleigh-downtown-RDUDWHX\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Hampton Inn &amp;
