{"id":2368,"date":"2016-01-26T17:49:08","date_gmt":"2016-01-26T21:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/?p=2368"},"modified":"2018-04-27T15:13:30","modified_gmt":"2018-04-27T19:13:30","slug":"shervin-tahssili-the-new-face-of-helios","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/glenwood-south\/shervin-tahssili-the-new-face-of-helios","title":{"rendered":"Shervin Tahssili: the New Face of Helios"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Donna Belt<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sometimes my husband and I look out from the porch of our fourth floor condo at 510 Glenwood and muse over how the neighborhood appears to be a stage set, with additional buildings entering the scene with regularity.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Each addition inevitably transforms the neighborhood as new residents arrive with fresh ideas, but this is doubly true of business owners who back their visions with investment in restaurants, shopping and services that largely shape how we define ourselves on the street.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2370\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Shervin1.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[2368]\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2370\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2370 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Shervin1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Shervin1\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Shervin1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Shervin1.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2370\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shervin Tahssili<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ideally, there is a respect and incorporation of the history of what has gone before, while bringing an innovative twist.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/shervin.tahssili\" target=\"_blank\">Shervin Tahssili<\/a>, the new owner of Helios that reopened early on the icy morning of Monday, January 25, describes this as a RESET.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Having lived in Raleigh since 1993, he had long admired <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clearscapes.com\/firm\/people\/sds\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Schuster\u2019s<\/a> 2002 trendy redesign of the Helios building that was ahead of its time as one of the first privately owned coffee shops in downtown Raleigh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When the building unexpectedly came on the market, it ignited Shervin\u2019s vision for how he could update and, well\u2026 <i>reset<\/i> this landmark on Glenwood South.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Marrying a life-long zest for warm, inclusive hospitality and a passion for design, he envisioned a space that could serve as a social club from 7AM, right through the day and into the night (till 2AM.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">With a world wide background that brought him to Raleigh via cities like Boston and Vienna, he imagined an up-lit garden courtyard where visitors could sit to enjoy the street scene, while the back would provide a private Tuscany alleyway where guests could tuck away with an expresso during the day or a Scotch later in the evening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Helios1.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[2368]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2371\" src=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Helios1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Helios1\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Helios1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Helios1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Helios1-100x75.jpg 100w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Helios1.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>With the assistance of designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CRIDesignz\" target=\"_blank\">Christine Rosario<\/a>, Shervin set about creating a space where the bar extends outside to unify indoor and outdoor areas.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This integrating concept echoes in stained glass windows Shervin designed to let in filtered light and complement Lisa Gaither\u2019s mural on the C. Grace building next door.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Tables from a small antique store in High Point and comfortably stylish chairs create a Zen living room crowned by a large, calming circle that dominates the back wall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Samad Hatchby (of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.babylonraleigh.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Babylon<\/a>) concludes that the new Helios looks like the lobby of an upscale boutique hotel and adds that the expresso is great.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Brian Burnett (of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.glenwoodsouthtailor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Glenwood South Tailors &amp; Alterations<\/a>) is taken with the food, describing the Chicken Caesar salad as having\u2026 \u201cgreat chicken to dressing ratio and beautiful color,\u201d declaring that \u201cShervin\u00a0is taking care of everyone!
