{"id":345,"date":"2012-03-19T18:17:45","date_gmt":"2012-03-19T22:17:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/?p=345"},"modified":"2018-04-27T15:14:35","modified_gmt":"2018-04-27T19:14:35","slug":"one-month-to-weigh-in-on-plans-for-capital-blvd-corridor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/glenwood-south\/one-month-to-weigh-in-on-plans-for-capital-blvd-corridor","title":{"rendered":"One Month to Weigh-in on Plans for Capital Blvd Corridor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The opening statement of the Capital Blvd Corridor Study Report describes it as \u201cthe most travelled and least-loved gateway into Downtown Raleigh.\u201d Now is the time to consider options that will make this road system into an entranceway that invites a more pleasant, pedestrian and commuter friendly gateway into Downtown.<\/p>\n<p>The city has just issued its updated vision and recommendations for the corridor, and opened a one month public comment period.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Download the report <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raleighnc.gov\/content\/PlanUrbanDesign\/Documents\/CapitalBlvd\/CapitalBlvdCorridorStudy.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Ways to submit comments listed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raleighnc.gov\/home\/news\/content\/CorNews\/Articles\/CapitalBlvdPublicComment.html\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s a 65 page report, so I\u2019ve identified some of the key items likely to be of most interest for residents who live, work or play in the northern end of Downtown Raleigh, in and around the Peace Street Corridor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Capital Blvd Interchange at Peace Street<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The present speed limit and design of the roadway make it difficult to safely access businesses adjacent to the southern end of Capital Blvd, and for pedestrians within the Peace Street corridor.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Recommendation<\/span>: Integrate this area with the urban grid by extending Johnson Street and Harrington Streets as a \u201cquadrant roadway interchange\u201d. Reference page 30 in the report.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Devereux Park<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_349\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/DevereuxMeadow-copy.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[345]\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-349\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-349\" title=\"DevereuxMeadow copy\" src=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/DevereuxMeadow-copy-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-349\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Devereux Meadow<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The area on the northwest corner of Peace Street and Capital Blvd was once a <a href=\"http:\/\/dtraleigh.com\/2010\/03\/baseball-in-downtown-devereux-meadow-meets-progress-in-raleigh\/\">baseball stadium<\/a>, and until recently the home of the City\u2019s Solid Waste Services Department.\u00a0 The adjacent West Street is \u201coff the beaten path\u201d with very little car and pedestrian traffic.<\/p>\n<div><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Recommendation<\/span>: Create a new park and greenway trail straddling a restored Pigeon House Branch at Devereux Meadows between Wade and Peace Streets.\u00a0 Reference page 44 in the report.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Recommendation<\/span>: Extend West Street north to Wake Forest Road to create a local access street that would run adjacent to the park and form an alternative route into Downtown Raleigh.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Future Residential \/ Business Growth<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This road configuration promises a huge impact on the growth of the northern end of Downtown.
