{"id":56,"date":"2010-05-03T15:29:28","date_gmt":"2010-05-03T15:29:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/\/?p=56"},"modified":"2018-04-27T15:15:33","modified_gmt":"2018-04-27T19:15:33","slug":"pigeon-house-branch-a-new-downtown-raleigh-waterway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighdla\/glenwood-south\/pigeon-house-branch-a-new-downtown-raleigh-waterway","title":{"rendered":"Pigeon House Branch, A &#8220;New&#8221; Downtown Raleigh Waterway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>Looking down from my Glenwood South condo terrace, I see a small creek that emerges from under my building, then disappears under West Street. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I&#8217;ve noticed the small creek before, but didn&#8217;t give it much thought until recently.&nbsp; That&#8217;s when I learned that the forgotten creek &#8211; today mostly buried in giant pipes &#8211; is actually the most prominent waterway in central Raleigh. Unfortunately, it&rsquo;s also the most abused.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span class=\"full-image-block ssNonEditable\"><span><img style=\"width: 500px;\" src=\"\/storage\/Pigeon_Creek_map.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1272900820006\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <a href=\"http:\/\/raleighnature.com\/2008\/11\/22\/pigeon-house-branch\/\"><span>Pigeon House Branch<\/span><\/a> flows from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bwwells.org\/emw.html\"><span>Edna Metz Wells Park<\/span><\/a>, just down from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shopcameronvillage.com\/\/index.cfm\"><span>Cameron Village<\/span><\/a>, through Cameron Park down Johnson Street, into Glenwood South, across Peace Street, down through the former Devereaux Meadows, and then flows north along Capital Boulevard.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><\/p>\n<p><span>Some of you may have read the story of <a href=\"http:\/\/dtraleigh.com\/2010\/03\/baseball-in-downtown-devereux-meadow-meets-progress-in-raleigh\/\"><span>Devereaux Meadows<\/span><\/a>, site of a former minor league baseball stadium that was featured a few months ago in the <a href=\"http:\/\/dtraleigh.com\/\"><span>DTraleigh.com<\/span><\/a> blog.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"full-image-block ssNonEditable\"><span><img src=\"\/storage\/ballpark_small.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1272900926131\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><span class=\"thumbnail-caption\" style=\"width: 500px;\">Devereaux Meadows, Courtesy of North Carolina State Archives<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There is a project underway by the city to clean up the creek, but city officials are starting to think BIGGER.&nbsp; Given the prominent location of the creek, running through the northern gateway into Downtown Raleigh, there is even talk of creating a &#8220;river walk&#8221;. &nbsp; This idea was first mentioned last year in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indyweek.com\/indyweek\/dan-douglas-european-vision-for-our-capital-city\/Content?oid=1218473\"><span>vision of Dan Douglas<\/span><\/a> for the Downtown&#8217;s northern gateway, now included in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.midtownraleighnews.com\/2010\/03\/17\/2233\/raleigh-to-study-capital-blvd.html\"><span>gateway options<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;under study by city planners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>A waterway \/ riverwalk could form an important part of the new northern gateway into the city, just as <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/dtraleigh.com\/2010\/04\/multimodal-station-will-be-raleigh-union-station-report-summarized\/\"><span><strong><em>Union Station <\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a><strong><em>anchors the southern gateway.&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Imagine walking or riding your bike down the &#8220;new&#8221; tree-lined green space along Capital Boulevard that borders this &#8220;new&#8221; waterway, as you watch passenger trains roll by on their way into Downtown Raleigh.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I see this vision becoming a reality in the not too distant future.&nbsp; Borrowing the words of John Lennon, &#8220;Maybe I&#8217;m a dreamer, but I&#8217;m not the only one!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><span>Looking down from my Glenwood South condo terrace, I see a small creek that emerges from under my building, then disappears under West Street. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I&#8217;ve noticed the small creek before, but didn&#8217;t give it much thought until recently.&nbsp; That&#8217;s when I learned that the forgotten creek &#8211; today mostly buried in giant pipes &#8211; is actually the most prominent waterway in central Raleigh.
