Computerized version of artist&#8217;s concept for Dillon mural<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you\u2019ve ever walked down the southern end of West Street, you might think it\u2019s a block that\u2019s been put on hold, with long brick buildings broken only by dashes of windows filled with curling, water stained paper marking what was once the bustling Dillon Supply offices.\u00a0 Yet this is setting poised to break loose.<\/p>\n<p>This 200 block of West Street is surrounded by a burgeoning art district with the nearby <a href=\"http:\/\/camraleigh.org\/\">Contemporary Art Museum (CAM)<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flandersartgallery.com\/\">Flanders Gallery<\/a>, as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/visualartexchange.org\/\">VAE<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designbox.us\/\">Design Box<\/a>.\u00a0 And of course there\u2019s the promise of this end of downtown becoming the center of public transit in Raleigh with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raleighnc.gov\/home\/news\/content\/CorNews\/Articles\/UnionStationCitizenInfoWorkshop.html\">plans for Union Station<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Enter BEST (Beautifying Emerging Spaces Together).\u00a0 As a passionately committed group of artists, residents and businesses who feel that they can shape downtown through shared creative expression, this is their idea of a prime location to get the community working together on a huge art project.\u00a0 BEST approached Triangle Transit a few months ago to propose putting a mural on the former Dillon Supply offices, between Martin and Hargett, and impressed with <a href=\"http:\/\/raleighemergingspaces.com\/about-best\">what BEST is all about and their vision<\/a>, the TTA Board approved the project.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>BEST\u2019s Concept for the Mural<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>We will begin by inviting children to add their handprints and body tracings to a design that will morph into a crowd boarding a train in front of a Raleigh skyscape.\u00a0 Phase II of the mural expands into a sunburst as the Wright brothers\u2019 plane and other flying machines soar over the North Carolina countryside.\u00a0 The theme, whether specifically reflecting Triangle Transit\u2019s role in regional transportation or applying to the limitless potential that we all share, is a spectacular celebration of the ways in which we move forward together.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><em>BEST Raleigh raising funds for the project now<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/best7-27-12.eventbrite.com\/?ref=elink\">launch party and fundraiser event<\/a> is going on THIS FRIDAY at Spy Raleigh.\u00a0 Downtown businesses have joined in this effort by contributing raffle prizes, just as the local arts community has come forward with a large variety of artwork for a silent and live auction.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairwayoutdoor.com\/\">Fairway Outdoor Advertising<\/a> is one such donor who has supplied a large vinyl banner with a computerized version of the mural that will be placed on the Dillon Building.\u00a0 Come to the event and <a href=\"http:\/\/raleighemergingspaces.com\/dillonbuilding\/your-signature-on-the-dillon-building\">sign this banner<\/a> to state your claim on the transformation of this part of town.\u00a0 And if you\u2019re wanting to make a bit more of a statement, a $1,000 donation will get your face on the mural.
