Six bards will be spinning yarns a special &#8220;Oak City Bard Brawl&#8221; competition hosted by WUNC&#8217;s Frank Stasio.<\/p>\n<p>The storytelling throwdown is a fundraiser for the Raleigh Public Record and will coincide with the news site&#8217;s launch of a books section featuring North Carolina authors and books.<\/p>\n<p>In the competition, six storytellers will tell their tales, but only one will be crowned King of the Bards. Three judges will choose a winner, who will earn Sir Walter Raleigh&#8217;s plumed hat.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This will be a fun way to highlight the importance of words and the craft of storytelling,&#8221; said Record Editor Charles Duncan Pardo. &#8220;Drinks and stories &#8212; what could be a better combination?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The event will take place at 7 p.m. April 10 at <a href=\"http:\/\/kingsbarcade.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kings Barcade<\/a>, 14 West Martin St. Raleigh. Tickets are $10 in advance and can be purchased<a href=\"http:\/\/www.etix.com\/ticket\/online\/performanceSearch.jsp?performance_id=1607799&amp;cobrand=white\" target=\"_blank\"> through Etix<\/a>. Door tickets are $12.<\/p>\n<p>Proceeds benefit the nonprofit Raleigh Public Record and its new book section, &#8220;Record Reads.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The section will be edited by Megan Roberts, Kelly Helder and Laura White. The goal is to create a place to discuss North Carolina authors and the state as a place in literature, Duncan Pardo said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want to highlight the North Carolina storytellers who put their words out there each year in books, and those who use North Carolina as a place in literature,&#8221; Duncan Pardo said. &#8220;As more and more sections of news dissipate with sliced budgets, we aim to to cover fiction and nonfiction like never before. It&#8217;s just one more way we can fill in the gaps in news coverage while simultaneously highlighting the writers in our great state.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Come one, come all!
