Go beyond the inverted pyramid and get creative in telling news stories to engage your readers. Training is free and open to all journalists, students and bloggers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What:<\/strong> Alternative approaches training<br \/>\n<strong>Who:<\/strong> Journalists, students, anyone writing for public consumption in print and online<br \/>\n<strong>Why:<\/strong> Because we can and should be interesting and engage readers while we report the news<br \/>\n<strong>When:<\/strong> 6 p.m. July 11, 2012<br \/>\n<strong>Where:<\/strong> A.J. He joined the faculty in 2005. Bechtel has nearly 12 years of editing experience in newspapers, primarily at The News &amp; Observer in Raleigh, N.C. He spent part of the summer of 2008 working as an editor at the Web site of the Los Angeles Times. His other experience includes work as a copy editor and page designer at the News &amp; Record in Greensboro, N.C.<\/p>\n<p>Bechtel is a member of the Executive Committee of the American Copy Editors Society, and he is the author of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsu.org\/courses\/course_detail.aspx?id=nwsu_asf07\" target=\"_blank\">NewsU course<\/a> on alternative story forms. He has written articles for publications such as Quill, Society for News Design Update and the North Carolina Media Law Handbook<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\":5w\"><\/div>\n<div><strong>Directions: <\/strong>The A.J.
