{"id":16389,"date":"2012-11-20T08:06:58","date_gmt":"2012-11-20T13:06:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raleighpublicrecord.org\/?p=16389"},"modified":"2012-11-20T11:29:53","modified_gmt":"2012-11-20T16:29:53","slug":"ywca-to-be-used-for-future-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/news\/2012\/11\/20\/ywca-to-be-used-for-future-school\/","title":{"rendered":"YWCA to be Used for Future School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By split vote Monday, Wake County Commissioners approved purchasing the YWCA to use for a future school.<\/p>\n<p>The property will be added to the county&#8217;s land bank; funding for a new school isn&#8217;t yet available.<\/p>\n<p>Chairman Paul Coble and Commissioners Tony Gurley and Phil Matthews voted against the purchase.<\/p>\n<p>Coble said he would not support the purchase because he did not think it was in a priority area, it is too small and that the county was paying too much for it.<\/p>\n<p>The county will pay $1 million for the 3-acre property and building on Hargett Street. The property was appraised for $1.1 million.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-15433\" title=\"YWCA_land\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raleighpublicrecord.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/YWCA_land-600x597.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"597\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\n<p>School District Facilities Manager Joe Desormeaux said at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raleighpublicrecord.org\/news\/2012\/11\/07\/commissioners-consider-ywca-for-downtown-school\/\">previous county meeting<\/a> that it was a good opportunity to purchase land inside the Beltline at a reasonable price. It also offers the flexibility not found on other comparable parcels.<\/p>\n<p>At Monday&#8217;s meeting, Desormeaux said the school would fill a much-needed space in that part of the county. The area has a seat shortfall for elementary, middle and high school students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe central region elementary seat shortfall is the worst in the county,\u201d he said.[media-credit id=25 align=&#8221;alignright&#8221; width=&#8221;300&#8243;]<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16397\" title=\"YWCA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raleighpublicrecord.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/YWCA-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a>[\/media-credit]<\/p>\n<p>It is the only school region without a land-banked site.<\/p>\n<p>Desormeaux said it was likely that the area would be used as an elementary school, but no plans have been finalized because there isn&#8217;t any funding.<\/p>\n<p>Staff estimates renovations will cost about $900,000 in construction and $200,000 for site work.<\/p>\n<p>If the county demolishes the building and constructs a new one, the property could hold a building that would house 300 to 500 students.<\/p>\n<p>The former YWCA is across the street from the county-owned A.A.
