{"id":19039,"date":"2013-04-10T16:05:04","date_gmt":"2013-04-10T20:05:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raleighpublicrecord.org\/?p=19039"},"modified":"2013-04-10T16:05:04","modified_gmt":"2013-04-10T20:05:04","slug":"developer-offers-to-fund-pedestrian-bridge-at-crabtree-mall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/news\/2013\/04\/10\/developer-offers-to-fund-pedestrian-bridge-at-crabtree-mall\/","title":{"rendered":"Developer Offers to Fund Pedestrian Bridge at Crabtree Mall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The long-sought pedestrian bridge over Glenwood Avenue near the Crabtree Valley Mall might finally come to fruition.<\/p>\n<p>The bridge could come as a part of a redevelopment project on Charles Drive, off of Lead Mine Road, which is known for being one of the most congested parts of the city. Developers have committed to paying for building and maintaining the bridge that would connect the north and south side of Glenwood Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>The connection would give pedestrians and bicyclists safe and easy access to the mall and the nearby greenways.<\/p>\n<p>There would also be some other connectivity improvements, including a connecting road to Marriott Drive.<\/p>\n<div  class=\"wp-caption module image aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 600px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/crabtree_text2.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cars jam the two right lanes of southbound Glenwood Avenue. Photo by Tyler Dukes.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The project is to redevelop an existing 112-unit apartment community. The plans for the mixed-use project include 175 residential units and 125,000 square feet of retail space with small boutiques and restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>Developers say the retail space won&#8217;t be built until the pedestrian bridge is constructed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are open to whatever it takes,\u201d Attorney Robin Curin said of getting the bridge built.<\/p>\n<p>The bridge is a part of the city\u2019s 2030 Comprehensive Plan and is an old request from area residents. Traffic along Glenwood has been a complaint, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raleighpublicrecord.org\/news\/transit\/2012\/04\/02\/crabtree-valley-causing-headache-for-city-planners\/\" target=\"_blank\">came up last April during discussion<\/a> of another mixed-use development in the area.<\/p>\n<p>The developer isn\u2019t the only one who has a say in the construction of the bridge.
