{"id":21063,"date":"2014-02-18T10:48:12","date_gmt":"2014-02-18T15:48:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/raleighpublicrecord.org\/?p=21063"},"modified":"2014-02-18T10:48:12","modified_gmt":"2014-02-18T15:48:12","slug":"moore-square-renovations-on-hold-awaiting-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/news\/2014\/02\/18\/moore-square-renovations-on-hold-awaiting-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Moore Square Renovations on Hold, Awaiting Funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Almost five years after its initial conception, a plan to redevelop downtown Raleigh\u2019s Moore Square remains on hold as the city looks for another $14.75 million for construction. <\/p>\n<p>In 2011, the city issued a draft copy of the <a href=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/news\/city-council\/2011\/05\/03\/raleigh-state-compromise-on-moore-square-design\/\" title=\"Raleigh, State Compromise on Moore Square Design\">Moore Square Master Plan<\/a>, which detailed a number of new features planned for the park, including a central lawn, caf\u00e9 kiosks and public restrooms. <\/p>\n<p>The American Society of Landscape Architects in 2013 honored the plans, drawn up by Christopher Counts Studio of New York, with an award in the analysis and planning category. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/mooresquare3-771x766.jpg\" alt=\"mooresquare3\" width=\"771\" height=\"766\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-21066\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/mooresquare3-771x766.jpg 771w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/mooresquare3-140x140.jpg 140w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/mooresquare3-336x334.jpg 336w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/mooresquare3-60x60.jpg 60w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/mooresquare3-1170x1163.jpg 1170w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 771px) 100vw, 771px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Beyond the plan itself and a <a href=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/news\/2013\/04\/29\/arborist-trees-will-survive-moore-square-redesign\/\" title=\"Arborist: Trees Will Survive Moore Square Redesign\">comprehensive tree and soil study<\/a> released in 2013, the city has yet to proceed on any of the redevelopment. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re currently waiting for funding to be available to be able to move forward,\u201d said Cassie Schumacher-Georgopoulos, a planner with the city\u2019s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department. <\/p>\n<p>The remaining funds would need to come from the city\u2019s budget, said Schumacher-Georgopoulos.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr a bond \u2013 we put requests into the general public improvement, but there are a lot of requests that go into that,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>In order to get a bond for the park\u2019s redevelopment on the ballot in November, the department would require approval from the City Council. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something that we\u2019re hopeful we may be able to move forward with,\u201d said Schumacher-Georgopoulos.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nWaiting Game<\/strong><br \/>\nIn the master plan, the budget is broken down into several categories, including earthwork, utilities and site hardscape. <img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/moore-square-336x199.jpg\" alt=\"moore square\" width=\"336\" height=\"199\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/moore-square-336x199.jpg 336w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/moore-square.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although the redevelopment itself could be broken down into different phases of varying costs, \u201cwe ideally would have the full amount for the project,\u201d before taking any further steps, said Schumacher-Georgopoulos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope we can move forward in the next one to five years,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce the funding is in place, we\u2019d be picking back up design services and moving forward with developing a schematic design, which would be a more detailed plan looking at grading and more at what your zoning requirements will be.\u201d<div id=\"attachment_6913\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 336px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/MooreSquare-336x252.jpg\" alt=\"Moore Square.
