{"id":21298,"date":"2014-04-08T09:35:43","date_gmt":"2014-04-08T13:35:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/raleighpublicrecord.org\/?p=21298"},"modified":"2014-04-09T11:25:44","modified_gmt":"2014-04-09T15:25:44","slug":"gianni-appointed-to-wake-commission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/news\/2014\/04\/08\/gianni-appointed-to-wake-commission\/","title":{"rendered":"Gianni Appointed to Wake Commission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>County Commission candidate Rich Gianni was unanimously appointed Monday to Commissioner Gurley\u2019s vacant seat, but got a bit of a scolding by Commissioner Betty Lou Ward because he didn\u2019t vote in last October\u2019s election. <\/p>\n<p>Gianni was the Wake County Republican Party\u2019s nominee to replace Gurley who resigned in February to take a job in Gov. Pat McCrory\u2019s office. Gianni will be running for the District 3 spot against Democrat Jessica Holmes in November. <img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/rich_gianni.jpg\" alt=\"rich_gianni\" width=\"160\" height=\"160\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-21299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/rich_gianni.jpg 160w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/rich_gianni-140x140.jpg 140w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/rich_gianni-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ward approved Gianni\u2019s appointment, but expressed concern that he didn\u2019t vote in last October\u2019s election, which included an $810 million school construction bond. Ward said that she\u2019d like Gianni to explain why we didn\u2019t vote. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a free society,\u201d said Board chair Phil Matthews, adding that his actions are reflective of his duties as a Commissioner. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think voting is a very important part of being a County Commissioner,\u201d Ward countered. <\/p>\n<p>Gianni will be sworn in on at the next regular meeting April 21. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Potential Brier Creek School Property Raises Questions<\/strong><br \/>\nA proposed future school site in western Wake County is raising questions because a portion of the property is located in Durham County. <\/p>\n<p>Funded by the 2013 school bond, school officials are considering purchasing the 22-acre site in Briar Creek for about $2.7 million. The purchase requires approval from the Board of Commissioners. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Wake_Durham_school-map.jpg\" alt=\"Wake_Durham_school-map\" width=\"726\" height=\"534\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Wake_Durham_school-map.jpg 726w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Wake_Durham_school-map-336x247.jpg 336w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 726px) 100vw, 726px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Assistant Superintendent for Facilities Joe Desormeaux said the Briar Creek area has experienced rapid growth in the past 10 years, but it\u2019s been a difficult place to find an appropriate property for a school. <\/p>\n<p>The fact that a portion of the property is in Durham County presents some challenges, but County Attorney Scott Warren said that as long as the school building itself is situated in Wake County, he doesn\u2019t foresee any problems. According to conceptual plans, part of a driveway and a stormwater device would be located on the Durham portion of the property. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Wake_Durham_school.png\" alt=\"Wake_Durham_school\" width=\"761\" height=\"668\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Wake_Durham_school.png 761w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Wake_Durham_school-336x294.png 336w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 761px) 100vw, 761px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this is a legal use of money,\u201d Warren said. <\/p>\n<p>Commissioners did not vote on the proposal; it requires a second reading. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis may be the first going outside the county,\u201d Ward said. \u201cBut I don\u2019t think it\u2019ll be the last.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>District 3 candidate Rich Gianni has been appointed to the vacant seat left by Tony Gurley, but not without some scolding by Commissioner Betty Lou Ward.
