City Council last week granted an extension for Meredith Heights, a\u00a0housing development\u00a0<\/a>that would be built\u00a0on Hillsborough Street near Meredith College.\u00a0The controversial development was, at one point, described as “just this side of shocking,\u201d due to its size.<\/p>\n

Hillsborough Street has of late become a hotbed for multifamily residential development. Earlier this month, permits were issued for a new apartment complex that will be built in front of the existing University Towers and a block away from the under-construction Stanhope.<\/p>\n

Reflecting a growing trend, the new complex is named after its address – 2811 Hillsborough. The 38,613 square foot building will feature 30 apartment units and ground floor retail, and will be built by Liberty Oak, Inc. at a permitted cost of more than $2.8 million.<\/p>\n

Although some local residents may not appreciate the increased density, the owner of the next-door Zaxby’s is likely thrilled. Imagine how many times you would eat there if it was right outside your front door. Dangerous.<\/p>\n

City Council last week also scheduled a public hearing on November 4, for a – hold on to your hat – Hillsborough Street residential mixed-use development. The project would be built at 2304 Hillsborough Street.<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>Even the most casual students of Western philosophy are familiar with Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. These scholars are, unfortunately, not likely to be as familiar with Plato’s Closet, purveyor of gently used designer clothes.<\/p>\n

The chain used-clothing outlet – it has locations up and down the eastern seaboard, and several in the area – will be opening its newest location in the Alexander Place shopping center at Brier Creek. It\u00a0will sit between a Mathnasium and a Best Buy.<\/p>\n

\"gametheory\"Game Theory, the popular Pleasant Valley board game shop, is set to undergo a relatively minor interior renovation. Permits were issued October 15 for the $1,205 job, which will enhance the space currently used for selling merchandise and hosting games and tournaments.<\/p>\n

Final permits for the interior completion of the Standard Foods, housed on East Franklin Street off Person, were issued October 17. The outlet bills itself as a “restaurant and top-of-the-line grocery store.” If they’re not already using the slogan “Standard Foods: Where the Food is Anything But,” they should be.<\/p>\n

Like a good neighbor, State Farm insurance recently booted anti-vaxxer Rob Schneider from an ad campaign that would have brought back his SNL Richmeister character. The Schneid-man. The Schneidster. Fired for talkin\u2019 crazy. The Scheidinantor.<\/p>\n

Either way, State Farm is also acting like a good neighbor right here in Raleigh, by expanding their office on Rowlock Way off Glenwood into an empty space next door. Permits for the $45,000 renovation were issued October 17 to Southpointe Developers.<\/p>\n

Hillsborough Street isn’t the only place for new multifamily development – a complex out on Mitchell Mill Road in North Raleigh was issued permits on October 16. The Park Place Apartments will consist of two 13,158 square foot buildings each containing 10 housing units. The apartments are located conveniently close to Family Dollar, which sits on an adjoining lot. As nice as that would be, a Zaxby’s is still better.<\/p>\n

Not to be left behind amidst all the new development, existing complex Whitaker Glen, located off Whitaker Mill Road, was recently permitted for more than $80,000 in interior renovations.<\/p>\n
