This is the first of what will be regular updates on how the city, county and state are using federal stimulus funds in the area.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Out of North Carolina&#8217;s $6.1 billion share of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, also known as the stimulus plan, $59.8 million is slated for road projects in Wake County.<\/p>\n<p>The North Carolina Department of Transportation has plans for 13 projects in Wake County, of those, six have received final approval from the federal government. Below is a summary of those six projects. Raleigh Public Record will be updating this list on a new stimulus page soon to be unveiled on raleighpublicrecord.org, and reporters will also be covering and tracking other stimulus money as it comes into Raleigh and Wake County.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DOT TIP number: <\/strong>I-5114<br \/>\n<strong>Where:<\/strong> 2.5 miles of I-440 from I-40 (Exit 301) to US 64-264 (Exit 14)<br \/>\n<strong>What:<\/strong> Replace bonded overlay<br \/>\n<strong>Estimated cost: <\/strong>$4.49 million<br \/>\n<strong>Actual cost:<\/strong> $3.43 million<br \/>\n<strong>General contractor:<\/strong> S.T. Wooten Corp. of Wilson<br \/>\n<strong>Subcontractors:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Anticipated completion date:<\/strong> June 30, 2010<br \/>\n<strong>Notes:<\/strong> This project had only two bidders: S.T. Wooten, the winning bidder, and REA Contracting of Charlotte. This project involves milling, paving and putting an asphalt overlay on 2.5 miles of the Beltline.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>DOT TIP number: <\/strong>I-5115<br \/>\n<strong>Where:<\/strong> 5.6 miles of I-440 from Wake Forest Road to Wade Avenue<br \/>\n<strong>What:<\/strong> Milling, resurfacing and shoulder reconstruction<br \/>\n<strong>Estimated cost:<\/strong> $4.98 million<br \/>\n<strong>Actual cost:<\/strong> $3.56 million<br \/>\n<strong>General contractor:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reacontract.com\/default.aspx\">REA Contracting LLC<\/a> of Charlotte<br \/>\n<strong>Subcontractors:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Anticipated completion date:<\/strong> October 30, 2009<br \/>\n<strong>Notes:<\/strong>Of the four companies that bid on this project, all submitted bids that were at least 20 percent under budget. The winning bid came in 28.5 percent below the estimated cost.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>DOT TIP number: <\/strong>I-5116<br \/>\n<strong>Where:<\/strong> 3.8 miles of I-540 from US 70 to I-40<br \/>\n<strong>What:<\/strong> Replace bonded overlay<br \/>\n<strong>Estimated cost:<\/strong> $3.2 million<br \/>\n<strong>Actual cost:<\/strong> $2.2 million<br \/>\n<strong>General contractor:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccmangum.com\/\">C C Mangum Co. LLC<\/a> of Raleigh<br \/>\n<strong>Subcontractors:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Anticipated completion date:<\/strong> May 27, 2010<br \/>\n<strong>Notes:<\/strong> This project is along I-540 in both Wake and Durham counties. Five North Carolina companies bid on the project and the winner came in $1 million under budget. All but one of the bidders came in under budget. The project involves milling and resurfacing 3.8 miles from US 70 to the I-40 interchange on I-540.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>DOT TIP number: <\/strong>I-5124<br \/>\n<strong>Where:<\/strong> I-440 from I-40 to I-40\/US 1-64 interchange<br \/>\n<strong>What:<\/strong> Install ITS devices<br \/>\n<strong>Estimated cost: <\/strong>$400,000<br \/>\n<strong>Actual cost:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>General contractor:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Subcontractors:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Anticipated completion date:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Notes:<\/strong> Bids for this project are due in July. The project involves installing technology such as cameras on I-440 on the northern section for the beltline where it is not connected to I-40.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>DOT TIP number: <\/strong>I-5125<br \/>\n<strong>Where:<\/strong> I-440 from Glen Eden Drive to US 1.<br \/>\n<strong>What:<\/strong> Painting six bridges<br \/>\n<strong>Estimated cost:<\/strong> $1.2 million<br \/>\n<strong>Actual cost:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>General contractor:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Subcontractors:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Anticipated completion date:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Notes:<\/strong>This bridge painting project was supposed to be awarded in April, but the DOT rejected the first round of bids. DOT spokesman Steve Abbott said in an email, &#8220;The initial low bidder requested to withdraw his bid because he did not feel he could perform the work for the\u00a0figure quoted in the\u00a0bid.\u00a0 NCDOT subsequently reviewed his request and decided to reject the bid.\u00a0The other two bids were more than 10% above the engineer&#8217;s estimate and\u00a0were also rejected. We plan\u00a0to re-advertise and take bids in late July.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>DOT TIP number: <\/strong>R-5123\/R-5137<br \/>\n<strong>Where:<\/strong> 15.5 miles on US 264 and 64. US 264 from US 64 to the Johnson County line and US 64 from the US 64\/264 bypass to the Nash County line.<br \/>\n<strong>What:<\/strong> Resurfacing, reconstructing guardrails and shoulder<br \/>\n<strong>Estimated cost:<\/strong> $7.5 million<br \/>\n<strong>Actual cost:<\/strong> $5.8 million<br \/>\n<strong>General contractor:<\/strong> S. T. Wooten Corp. of Wilson<br \/>\n<strong>Subcontractors:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Anticipated completion date: <\/strong>November 1, 2009<br \/>\n<strong>Notes: <\/strong>Three companies bid on this project and it came in 23 percent under budget.
