joked Eileen Navarrete, PE, a construction projects administrator with the city of Raleigh.<\/p>\n<p>Navarette went on to describe it as &#8220;one of the most important sanitary sewer projects, that&#8217;s also one of the most intrusive sanitary sewer projects.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21157\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 336px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-21157 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/sanitary_sewer_work-336x492.jpg\" alt=\"Crews work on sewer lines in this photo used during a city presentation about the changes. \" width=\"336\" height=\"492\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/sanitary_sewer_work-336x492.jpg 336w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/sanitary_sewer_work.jpg 484w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">City of Raleigh<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Crews work on sewer lines in this photo used during a city presentation about the changes.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The whole of phase II will see the installation of 21,000 linear feet of 54-inch sanitary sewer piping in the area.<\/p>\n<p>A significant portion of the project will involve digging tunnels under city roads, which Navarette described as &#8220;very expensive but very safe \u2014\u00a0it allows us to dig underneath roads without cutting them open.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As there are only about a dozen contractors in the country who specialize in this kind of work, Navarette said\u00a0the city made the decision to bid this $15 million portion of the contract by itself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Travel Impact<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although the city did its best to minimize the disruption caused by the project, Navarette said there will be inevitable closures on portions of the city&#8217;s greenway system, along with key travel route Atlantic Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re going to leave Atlantic Avenue open one lane in each direction during the week, with a few weekend closures,&#8221;
