Council will talk about a new logo for Raleigh, the city employee health insurance plan and new rules for road races. Read the full agenda below and follow the meeting on Twitter.

$20,000 for a new city logo?

During the last meeting councilors discussed developing a new city logo. The public affairs department actually worked on developing a new logo two years ago, but the economic situation at the time shelved the project.

The committee studying a new logo and use guide recommended Oddfellows, a Raleigh-based firm that developed the logos for several downtown restaurants, including The Pit and Morning Times, as well as the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources and the International Affairs council.

The report to council says developing a new logo and use guide would cost between $15,000 and $20,000.

Comp plan update

The city’s 2030 Comprehensive Plan is getting close to the 6-month mark and that’s the first landmark to make changes to the plans. Lots of small corrections, typos, updated traffic plans and that kind of things to fix. But also the Hillsborough Street bike lanes are on the agenda and one citizen request to change the designation of the Holly Ridge Farm area in northwest Raleigh. Read the full set of changes here. Council could put the changes out for public hearing next month.

City health insurance plan

City employees could see changes to their health insurance program. A committee studying possible cuts to the insurance program recommends keeping Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina as the insurer, but its report says the city could save $800,000 by changing prescription drug coverage to the CVS Caremark plan instead of the Blue Cross plan.

New rules for Hillsborough Street road races

District D councilor Thomas Crowder has brought concerns from his constituents to the table about road races causing problems along Hillsborough Street and downtown. A council committee looked into the issues and will bring a set of recommendations for the full council to consider. The proposed rules:

The race must start at 7:00 a.m. in order to lessen the impact to traffic and businesses.

The start/finish venue must be outside the immediate downtown area.

The route may travel through the downtown area just once.

The most recent Raleigh Rocks Marathon route and others that may follow the same route cannot be run on Sunday due to the impact on church services.

Notification must be given to impacted neighborhood associations, homeowner’s associations, neighborhood registries, Raleigh Academy of Chinese Language and/or other impacted associations.

City Council Agenda May 18 2010

Council will talk about a new logo for Raleigh, the city employee health insurance plan and new rules for road races.

[4,15,23
