{"id":7124,"date":"2011-05-18T11:18:55","date_gmt":"2011-05-18T15:18:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raleighpublicrecord.org\/?p=7124"},"modified":"2011-05-18T11:18:55","modified_gmt":"2011-05-18T15:18:55","slug":"wake-schools-cuts-174-jobs-more-could-be-on-the-table","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/news\/2011\/05\/18\/wake-schools-cuts-174-jobs-more-could-be-on-the-table\/","title":{"rendered":"Wake Schools Cuts 174 Jobs, More Could Be on the Table"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Wake  County school board voted this week to cut 174 clerical jobs.<\/p>\n<p>At its Tuesday meeting the board voted 5-2 to approve a reduction in force for 155 school-based clerical and 19 central services secretarial positions.<\/p>\n<p>These positions were eliminated in Superintendent Tony Tata\u2019s budget proposal and will save the district more than $5 million.<\/p>\n<p>David Neter, the district\u2019s chief financial officer, warned that the cuts could be only the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current proposal in the [North Carolina House of Representatives] cuts $8 million in non-instructional support,\u201d he said, adding that the current reduction in force only covers a little more than half of that deficit. Additional job losses could come in the custodial staff.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Hill, who voted against the cuts along with Anne McLaurin, did not believe uniform clerical cuts at all schools were wise. Roughly each school in the district lost one clerical position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe impact at the elementary level could have an impact on classrooms,\u201d Hill said. \u201cI consider the library a classroom. I\u2019m not comfortable relying on volunteers.
