{"id":7190,"date":"2011-05-24T21:07:28","date_gmt":"2011-05-25T01:07:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raleighpublicrecord.org\/?p=7190"},"modified":"2011-05-25T10:45:04","modified_gmt":"2011-05-25T14:45:04","slug":"city-committee-approves-tornado-relief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/news\/city-council\/2011\/05\/24\/city-committee-approves-tornado-relief\/","title":{"rendered":"City Committee Approves Tornado Relief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Residents whose homes were destroyed in the April 16 tornado could have access to city funding for repairs.<\/p>\n<p>The City Council\u2019s Budget and Economic Development Committee unanimously approved a measure Monday to provide $400,000 for low and moderate-income residents who have exhausted all other avenues of financial assistance.<\/p>\n<p>The program would have to be approved by the City Council before going into effect.<\/p>\n<p>The financial aid would be used to bring houses up to the minimum code necessary to enable the owners\u2019 return;\u00a0 additional rehabilitation or renovations will not be funded. Officials would conduct credit checks to ensure the home is not in foreclosure or has any other liens.<\/p>\n<p>Councilman Eugene Weeks broached the issue of tornado relief at a previous council meeting. He told members of the BED committee he has spoken with residents who were not eligible for FEMA assistance even though a tree had crushed their roof.<\/p>\n<p>City Manager Russell Allen could not provide an exact number of how many residents would be eligible for city assistance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEstimates could be 50 or so, but we really don\u2019t know,\u201d he said. \u201cThat opened-ended part is the concern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The program would draw funds from the city&#8217;s federal housing grants, which would affect other city housing programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have other programs that will be placed on hold,\u201d said Community Development Director Michele Grant.. \u201cThose applicants would have to wait for assistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>amonti@raleighpublicrecord.org<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Residents whose homes were destroyed in the April 16 tornado could have access to city funding for repairs.
