Two New Dog-Friendly Facilities one Step Closer to Approval"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Raleigh\u2019s canine residents are one step closer to having two more places in which they can\u00a0run free and romp with other dogs.<\/p>\n<p>The Greenway and Urban Trees Committee this week finalized recommendations for a dog\u00a0park at Buffaloe Road Athletic Park and a dog run at Jaycee Park. The entrance to the dog parks will be on the east side of the fenced area to\u00a0keep separated dog park attendees and those heading to the aquatic center. Some existing\u00a0parking located near the proposed walkway will be designated for dogs and their owners.<\/p>\n<p>Construction costs for the park come in at about $94,600, plus about $12,900 in additional\u00a0project costs (benches, waste stations, grading).<\/p>\n<p>At about a quarter of an acre, the dog run at Jaycee Park will be much smaller in size and\u00a0won\u2019t include separated areas for large dogs and small dogs. The dog run will be located in\u00a0the same area as the current comfort station and picnic area, which have been slated for\u00a0demolition as part of a separate project.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_83680\"  class=\"wp-caption module image aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 640px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-83680\" src=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/jaycee.jpg\" alt=\"Jaycee Park\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/jaycee.jpg 640w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/jaycee-336x252.jpg 336w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jaycee Park<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A new comfort station, picnic area and playground\u00a0are also scheduled to be built at the park.<\/p>\n<p>Construction costs for the run are expected to be about $20,800, plus about $3,600 in\u00a0additional project costs.<\/p>\n<p>A handful of meeting attendees praised the inclusion of the parks; dog owner Andrea Roush\u00a0said the issue hits close to home. While she and her husband live closer to the dog park in\u00a0Oakwood, she is looking forward to having to other locations to which she can bring her\u00a0canine companions.<\/p>\n<p>Oakwood, a popular dog park, she said is often jammed packed no\u00a0matter the season.<\/p>\n<p>Kids football and baseball coach Jay Walden said he\u2019s coming at the issue from a different\u00a0perspective. Interestingly enough, a few hours before the committee meeting, Mayor Nancy McFarlane asked staff to look into the possibility of installing a dog run at Fletcher Park.<\/p>\n<p>During the heated debate that lead to the decision, dog owners complained that the city had\u00a0too few locations where they could let their dogs run off-leash.
