{"id":9501,"date":"2011-11-08T23:04:26","date_gmt":"2011-11-09T04:04:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raleighpublicrecord.org\/?p=9501"},"modified":"2011-11-08T23:04:26","modified_gmt":"2011-11-09T04:04:26","slug":"dems-regain-control-of-school-board","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/news\/2011\/11\/08\/dems-regain-control-of-school-board\/","title":{"rendered":"Dems Regain Control of School Board"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Democrats regained control of the Wake County school board Tuesday, with Kevin Hill (D) defeating Heather Losurdo (R) 52 percent to 48 percent in a runoff election.<\/p>\n<p>More than 20,000 voters cast ballots \u2014 29 percent of the voters in District 3. In the October election, when voters also decided on city council and mayoral candidates, about 16,500 District 3 voters went to the polls.<\/p>\n<p>The runoff was the culmination of a heavily contested October election in which four Democrats won school board seats outright.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m exhausted,\u201d Hill said at his victory party. \u201cI only slept about three hours last night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Voters were not only choosing a candidate, but <a href=\"..\/news\/2011\/10\/25\/student-assignment-direction-at-stake-in-school-board-runoff\/\">choosing a direction for Wake County School assignment.<\/a> Outside groups spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to influence the elections and the Losurdo and Hill campaigns raised more than $100,000 combined.<\/p>\n<p>Luther Snyder of the Losurdo campaign said their volunteers did everything they could to get Losurdo elected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just wasn\u2019t meant to be. Photo by Will Huntsberry.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Hill\u2019s victory party was attended by many Democratic Party leaders, including the state and county chairs of the Democratic Party, Rep.
