{"id":98711,"date":"2016-06-13T06:02:05","date_gmt":"2016-06-13T10:02:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/raleighpublicrecord.org\/?p=98711"},"modified":"2016-06-16T08:53:40","modified_gmt":"2016-06-16T12:53:40","slug":"relationships-the-lustre-of-tradition-at-reliable-loan-jewelry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/strictly-business\/2016\/06\/13\/relationships-the-lustre-of-tradition-at-reliable-loan-jewelry\/","title":{"rendered":"Relationships: The Lustre of Tradition at Reliable Loan &#038; Jewelry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This is the first in our newest series, Strictly Business, featuring interviews with Raleigh&#8217;s many small business owners.\u00a0Recently, we sat down with Alan Horwitz of Reliable Jewelry, who talked about the unique experiences and lasting relationships that come from\u00a0<\/em><em>running a generational jewelry business in the heart of downtown Raleigh.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The most significant thing Alan Horwitz learned about the jewelry business wasn&#8217;t something he\u00a0learned at his alma mater, the University of Alabama.\u00a0 Or during the few years he spent working at jewelry stores in New York and Atlanta after graduating and then earning gemologist certification from the Gemological Institute of America.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_98708\"  class=\"wp-caption module image aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 771px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-98708\" src=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/ah1-771x578.jpg\" alt=\"Alan Horwitz\" width=\"771\" height=\"578\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/ah1-771x578.jpg 771w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/ah1-336x252.jpg 336w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/ah1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/ah1-1170x878.jpg 1170w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/ah1-800x600.jpg 800w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/ah1.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 771px) 100vw, 771px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">MJ Vieweg<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alan Horwitz<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He learned it from his dad, Phillip.<\/p>\n<p>As a young boy, Alan would sometimes accompany his father to work at Reliable Loan &amp; Jewelry. \u201cI used to run through the store, around the customers and play with things I wasn\u2019t supposed to,\u201d he admitted.\u00a0 But when he got a little older his father, Phillip, had him helping out in the store.\u00a0 \u201cI wasn\u2019t selling diamonds back then; I was doing grunt work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>All the while, though, Alan watched his dad.\u00a0 He watched how Phillip interacted with the people that came into the store, noticed how his father listened to them talk about the jewelry they were looking for and why; listened as his dad respectfully guided and informed those making decisions to mark any number of special moments in their lives.<\/p>\n<p>Alan realized that his dad treated people \u201cright,\u201d and early on, he began to emulate his Dad\u2019s ways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you treat people the right way; with respect and make them happy, offer them good deals, they will tell their friends who will then tell their friends and so on. He\u2019s shown me everything as far as running this business,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd, once in a while, he will ask me for advice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Working with fine diamonds and gemstones intrigues Alan, a certified gemologist. But beyond the appreciation of the beauty of any one stone, or piece of jewelry, what seems to be of even more value is the reaction of his customers when he can locate or help design the perfect piece.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I have helped someone find an engagement ring for his fianc\u00e9 and they send me a picture of the ring on the finger \u2014 that\u2019s a good feeling,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Though it seems more like a repositioning rather than relocation, Reliable Jewelry and Loan will move to a new location this summer to the corner of E. Davie and S. Wilmington.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s a busy corner of downtown Raleigh.\u00a0 There\u2019s a lot of foot traffic here and the location will have office space and apartments, so there will be increased exposure.\u00a0 The new store has a different floor plan and the space is three times as wide,\u201d Alan said.<\/p>\n<p>There have been opportunities before to expand to North Raleigh, but Alan said he wouldn\u2019t feel right about moving out of the downtown area.\u00a0 Part of the business is offering collateral loans, which is a service local residents are accustomed to using.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_98707\"  class=\"wp-caption module image aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 771px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-98707\" src=\"http:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/stfrt2-771x578.jpg\" alt=\"Reliable Loan &amp; Jewelry\" width=\"771\" height=\"578\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/stfrt2-771x578.jpg 771w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/stfrt2-336x252.jpg 336w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/stfrt2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/stfrt2-1170x878.jpg 1170w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/stfrt2-800x600.jpg 800w, https:\/\/theraleighcommons.org\/raleighpublicrecord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/stfrt2.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 771px) 100vw, 771px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">MJ Vieweg<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reliable Loan &amp; Jewelry<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe have regular customers that come to us every week,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople know where we are and are used to coming down here.\u00a0 As a \u2018generational\u2019 business, I think it\u2019s important to remain downtown,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t think there is a better place to be than downtown right now with all the new business and residences coming in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And working in a family business that spans generations is not something that Alan takes for granted.\u00a0 \u201cIt is humbling and I feel fortunate to be in this position.\u00a0\u00a0 I try to do my best every day to keep our name and reputation where it is,\u201d he said.
