Officials Break Ground on the Chavis Park Carousel House

A groundbreaking took place Saturday for the new Chavis Carousel House at Chavis Park. The new building will house Chavis Park’s Historic Allan Herschell Carousel.

The new carousel house will be situated so that as riders will be able to see the the buildings in downtown Raleigh.

Parks and Recreation Park Planner Cassie Schumacher-Georgopoulos said, ” . . while the house will be new, the horses are the same historic horses only with refurbished manes and tails.”

Construction of the new carousel house is expected to begin in March at a cost of $1.8 million. The project is expected to be complete in late fall 2012.

Ready for the groundbreaking ceremony. Once complete, carousel riders will have a view of downtown Raleigh.
