Come one, come all! Six bards will be spinning yarns a special “Oak City Bard Brawl” competition hosted by WUNC’s Frank Stasio.
The storytelling throwdown is a fundraiser for the Raleigh Public Record and will coincide with the news site’s launch of a books section featuring North Carolina authors and books.
In the competition, six storytellers will tell their tales, but only one will be crowned King of the Bards. Three judges will choose a winner, who will earn Sir Walter Raleigh’s plumed hat.
“This will be a fun way to highlight the importance of words and the craft of storytelling,” said Record Editor Charles Duncan Pardo. “Drinks and stories — what could be a better combination?”
The event will take place at 7 p.m. April 10 at Kings Barcade, 14 West Martin St. Raleigh. Tickets are $10 in advance and can be purchased through Etix. Door tickets are $12.
Proceeds benefit the nonprofit Raleigh Public Record and its new book section, “Record Reads.”
The section will be edited by Megan Roberts, Kelly Helder and Laura White. The goal is to create a place to discuss North Carolina authors and the state as a place in literature, Duncan Pardo said.
“We want to highlight the North Carolina storytellers who put their words out there each year in books, and those who use North Carolina as a place in literature,” Duncan Pardo said. “As more and more sections of news dissipate with sliced budgets, we aim to to cover fiction and nonfiction like never before. It’s just one more way we can fill in the gaps in news coverage while simultaneously highlighting the writers in our great state.”
