To add a little healthy competition to its regular training, the Raleigh Police Department held its first skills competition this week for motorcycle unit officers. The competition was open to agencies across the state and received participants from as close as Cary and from as far as Winston-Salem.

“We are training, but I’ve thrown in the added twist of this competition,” said Sargent J.J. King, who organized the event.

On the first day, officers competed in four multi-skill courses in either intermediate or advanced – depending on how long they’ve been on their bikes. On the second day, officers paid to compete in each course. Proceeds were given to the Special Olympics of North Carolina.

King said they plan to host the event again next year.
