Thank you to everyone who joined us at Tir Na Nog Wednesday night for the first RaleighTalks. Our goal with the conversation was to spark a broader discussion about to role of historic districts in a growing city. The controversy over the Euclid Street house should be a starting point for the important debate that needs to happen in this city. I know the debate in Oakwood has become heated at times, but the residents of Raleigh and our elected leaders need to be able to have this broader conversation now and not try to deal with these issues development by development.

Our work at Raleigh Public Record is meant to spark these larger conversations about policy in Raleigh. I always tell our new reporters and supporters that every story we do is a growth story. Water policy, the county budget, beehives in the Oakwood Cemetery, complaints about the Hookah Bar off Glenwood — all growth stories.
I know a lot of you who showed up Wednesday night are new to the Record, so allow me to introduce our crew. We are a nonprofit, online-only news organization. We focus on Raleigh and only Raleigh with straight, local journalism. We adhere to the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics and, despite a new business model and online platform, we are pretty traditional when it comes to our journalism. We often get the question, so what’s your bias? We have two biases: we love this city, it’s our home; and we feel local journalism is one of the keys to a healthy, successful city.
I hope you’ll consider joining us and supporting local journalism. We want to continue our work here, but we can’t do it without your support.
