Our Picks of the Week (full calendar below)

Wednesday 4/13

Anne McCue – Pourhouse (Americana) – 9 p.m./$12 Cover

This Nashville-based singer/songwriter and band brings some of the livelier voices to the Americana/Roots scene. Ms. McCue is right on target with her crystal clear vocals and excellent musical accompaniment. The sound is simply amazing and that coupled with her remarkable stage presence; it’s a great night of music and entertainment.  Come out and check out one of the rising stars out of Nashville.

Thursday 4/14

Old Habits – The Point (Folk/Bluegrass) – 9 p.m.

Raleigh favorites for folk/bluegrass, Craig Thompson and co. gear up for a three-night run in Raleigh.  Catch them on their first night at the Point. This is one of their favorite places to play so you can expect a great show full of their best songs as well as some new ones.

Soja, The Movement – Lincoln Theatre (Reggae) – 8 p.m.

This is the place to get your Reggae fix for the week.  Three Great Bands: Soja, Mambo Sauce & The Movement take the stage to give you one great night of Reggae with some Hip-Hop mash up. This is going to be a great night of music and dancing. Come out and see these guys as they make their quarterly rounds of the Triangle area.

Friday 4/15

Drivin N’ Cryin – Pourhouse (Southern Rock) – 9 p.m./$18 Cover

Southern Rock Royalty. This band got their start in the Atlanta/Athens area and have been rocking it out since the 1980s (with a brief hiatus in the mid 2000s).  Their style of Alt Rock gave way to their true strength and their roots of Southern Rock and has given them mild success on the National scene.  Back together for a couple of years now, they have hit full stride and will bring a great night of rock to the Pourhouse. Skullbuckle and The Poonhounds open the night.

A Rooster for the Masses, River City Ransom – Kings Barcade (Indie) – 10 p.m./$8 Cover

This is a CD Release party “No One is Ready.” This indie rock band has been very successful here locally with their Indie/Alt vibe and have attracted a sizeable loyal following.  You can expect the typical alt/grunge sound mixed with piercing vocals that will keep you interested and will showcase the musical talents as they build up the set with tension and emotion. Great night of music that will be opened by another local band, River City Ransom.

The Veldt – Southland Ballroom (Rock/Psychedelic/Shoegaze) – 9:30 p.m./$10 Cover

Back together for a few select shows, this former brit-pop group with Chapel Hill roots is ready to light up the night at Southland. Starting out in the 1990s, this band gained immediate cachet in the Chapel Hill scene and that built up an international following that was fiercely loyal and built up to an apex in the late 90s.  The guys are back together for a few gigs, and we can expect some of their best stuff (with enthusiasm making up for any “rust.”)  Expect a great night of music and a reunion of sorts this Friday. 100 Yorktown, The Breaks & More will open the night.

Saturday, 4/16

CueGrass Feat. American Aquarium, Yarn, Big Daddy Love, Tres Chicas & The Thompson Brothers (Corner of Davie & Harrington) – 11:30 a.m./$5 Cover (for charity)

This annual event has been known far and wide for delivering on three things: Great Music, Great Beer, & Good Barbeque.  This year is no different as there will be no shortage of food, beverage and great music that appeal to a wide variety of listening preferences. From indie, to folk, to roots/Americana to jam, there is something for everyone.  The Marquee on the bill has got to be Tres Chicas – which is made up of some of the more talented female vocalists in the region. As an added bonus, all gate revenue will be donated to the NC Farmers Association.

Old Bricks – Kings (Indie) – 10 p.m./$6 Cover

A CD Release party of sorts for this Raleigh band, Old Bricks has expanded their sound with additional members that brings more depth and power to their meaty, yet dark indie sound.  This is a great opportunity to check out some local indie groups on the rise here in the area. Wild Wild Geese and Nests open the evening of music.

Sunday, 4/18

The New King Rippers (Jazz) – Sadlacks  – 5:30 p.m./Free

What a True Delight and the Highlight of my Week. Personal faves of mine, Raleigh-based New King Rippers play a style of Dixieland Jazz that takes me back to my formative years living in and around New Orleans.  Nothing better than a Pimms Cup and some solid jazz to kick up the heels and dance.  Check them out if you have any interest in jazz, brass or you just like a good time with good music. These guys will not disappoint. Dave Wright is masterful on the trombone and could very easily swap in or out with greats like Mark Mullins, Craig Klein, or Trombone Shorty. He has surrounded himself with an equally impressive group of musicians who would fit right into any location in the New Orleans area.  This is a real treat and is NOT to be missed.
