Picks of the Week
Thursday 6/16
The Archbishops of Blount Street – Tir Na Nog (Funk/Ska) – 10 p.m. | Free
This is/was rescheduled from last week and Part of the Local Beer, Local Band Series. The Triangle’s only Funk/Ska band is going to blow the doors off the place! Mixing some of their own songs in with old favorites, this band is brass heavy and reminds me of a Cross between Johnny Sketch & the Dirty Notes and the Pietasters. Bottom line – these guys are amazing.
Oh No Fiasco! – Berkeley Café (Indie) – 9 p.m. | $8
This Knoxville-based Indie/Dance Rock band has been touring extensively, and is well-known for explosive shows and an incredible stage presence. This will be a high-energy, hard driving show punctuated by the piercing vocals of Lindsey Stamey. If you like Owl City, you will most certainly like this band. Local Faves Knockout Roses and Mumu Tutu will be opening the show.
Friday 6/17
Bong Hits for Jesus – Dive Bar (Funk/Rock) – 10 p.m. | $5
This Philly-based band has deep and driving funk sounds and will funk up the Dive Bar for the start of the weekend. This show is for the funk lovers in the area. It’s the perfect show on a Friday to experience these guys as they toy with funk and rock and jam out the night.
Clay Pigeons, Yo Mamas Big Fat Booty Band – The Pour House (Funk/Folk) – 10 p.m. | $12
An interesting combination of two different bands in the same evening. But in a strange way, they share a similar energy and it creates a night of music with a little something for everyone. New York City’s Clay Pigeons have a indie sound that has a bit of a retro feel. Maybe it’s the echo vocals. Whatever it is, it’s a great hook and thankfully it doesn’t stop there. Solid driving guitars round out the sound and it will make for a great set of music. Asheville’s Yo Mamas Big Fat Booty Band bring a Western NC funk sound infused with psychedelic jam rock. They are stalwarts on the Funk scene in Western NC and they have a loyal and large following – be prepared for some serious music and dancing!
Mary Selvidge, Porter Hall, Steve Howell & The Lonesome Teardrops (Country/Americana) – 10 p.m. | $10
This is the closest Raleigh will come to a good ole Honky Tonk this week. Not to worry — the award-winning musical talents of North Carolina native Mary Selvidge will amaze and astound. In what is already a crowded market of female vocal talent, Mary is able to offer belting power as well as soft lullaby vocals to match the song and the tone. The result is an entertaining evening of music. This is likely the best female vocal music that you will hear in the Raleigh market this week. If you like Allison Kraus or Jeanne Jolly – this is the show for you! Porter Hall and Steve Howell w/ The Lonesome Teardrops open the evening.
Saturday, 6/18
Beau Soleil avec Michael Doucet – North Carolina Museum of Art (Cajun) – 8 p.m. | $15-$25
In what is billed as “The World’s Best Cajun Band,” these Grammy Winners from Lafayette, Louisiana are the second part of the 2011 “Louisiana Dance Party at NCMA. This band has been through a few changes over the years with the likes of Mary Chapin Carpenter and Michael Doucet and have had a few top 20 hits along the way to boot. Through out their 30+ year existence they have kept true to one thing – the truly unique Cajun music experience – blending elements on New Orleans Jazz, Zydeco, Country and Blues into their Louisiana Folk sound. The result is a masterful sound that encourages easy listening and of course, Dancing avec the Cajun Deux-step. These guys are a true treasure and this is NOT a show to be missed.
Luego, The Annuals, Jenna & The Jintlemen – Kings Barcade (Indie) – 9:30 p.m. | $8
Three great local indie bands come to Kings for a great night of music! Luego, The Annuals and Jenna & The Jintlemen all have different styles, but they are all variations of a theme: solid Indie Rock. Expect great vocals and indie/folk from Luego, a little more intense Rock theme from Annuals and then a little of both from Jenna and her boys.
Heavy Pets, Bubonik Funk – Southland Ballroom (Funk/Jam) – 10 p.m. | $10
THE place in town to be for Jam/Funk for tonight, especially for the Phish afterparty. Ft. Lauderdale based Heavy Pets is on an extended East Coast tour that thus far has been extremely successful, including a gig at Bonnaroo. Come jam out with their contagious, sing-along, dance-along style. It’s certainly the basis for a great party and will serve to warm up the crowd for the funky grooves of Charlotte-based Bubonik Funk.
Sunday – 6/19
Miracle Fortress, Motor Skills – Kings Barcade (House/Electronica) – 9:30 p.m. | $6
Two great acts that will stretch the limits of House/Electronica. Montreal-based Miracle Fortress is back on tour promoting a second album after their very successful debut. They mix elements of house, trace and simple electronica that creates and easy listening sound. I listen to this and it brings me back to my days of being in a Montreal bookstore or the boutiques on Blvd St. Laurent. This is great stuff and is not to be missed if you have any interest in this style of music. If you like The Hood Internet you will love this sound, although it’s a little more laid back. Local band Motor Skills will open the evening.
Borgore – Lincoln Theatre (Dance/Electronica) – 8 p.m. | $16
Certainly one the Elite artists of the turntable, this Israeli from Tel Aviv is on a World Tour and is ready to blow out the doors of the Lincoln Theatre. If you love Archnemisis, Pretty Lights or Girl Talk, you will love this show. Blending elements of house, techno and hip-hop – along with a global vibe – this is what the masses are listening to in the best clubs of Global hotspots: Ibiza, Corfu, Paris, Miami, New York, Montreal, Moscow, Shanghai, ect. Raleigh is truly lucky to land a show of this magnitude.
