Senate bill could stop Raleigh’s billboard ban

S.B. 183 would nullify ordinances in Raleigh and other communities that ban billboards on thoroughfares and local sections of interstate highways. Under the bill, automatic changeable facing signs – billboards with panels or slats that move to allow a new advertisement to display – would be legal on “any interstate or primary highway system route” within the state, even if such structures are already illegal in local jurisdictions.

Tata makes his case in East Raleigh

New Wake County Public School System Superintendent Anthony Tata sought to paint himself as a friend to parents and students disgruntled over the district’s reassignment changes in a public forum Thursday night.

City Museum short $30k

The Raleigh City Museum is requesting $15,000 from the City Council to supplement its budget for the next fiscal year. The money would go toward filling a $30,000 budget shortfall caused by a faulty air conditioner and a rental vacancy in the museum’s downtown Briggs Building location.

Wake wants countywide vote for school board reps

The Wake County Board of Commissioners voted 5-2 on Tuesday to include on its 2011 legislative agenda a push to elect a majority of Wake County School Board Members at large. Currently each school board member is elected by district, but the proposal would make some school board elections county wide. The idea would need approval from the state legislature to move forward.

City moves forward with new facility despite contamination

The Raleigh City Council voted this week to move forward on developing a new facility on a hazardous waste site after depleting a $300,000 escrow account earmarked for environmental cleanup. Additional cleanup efforts would cost $420,000 over the next three years, with the total climbing to about $1.5 million over thirty years of monitoring.
