A general election, a runoff and half a million dollars later, diversity supporters regain the majority on the Wake County Board of Education.
The school board elections have seen historic amounts of money flowing in as well as historic voter turnout. As the Hill and Losurdo campaigns enter the last few days before the runoff election in District 3, we size up the politics and the turnout that are driving the race.
The Wake County School Board will assume new leadership Dec. 6, but one seat is still undecided. We take a look at the Nov. 8 runoff candidates and the implications for student assignment.
Board members approved a new assignment plan for Wake County schools Tuesday. But with board control still up in the air, it’s unclear if the full plan will stick.
Kevin Hill needed just 49 of the total votes in Tuesday’s election to win the District 3 school board seat. More than 100 absentee ballots are sitting in the Wake County Board of Elections office, but statistically, it’s unlikely they will give Hill the votes he needs to avoid a run-off with Heather Losurdo.
Diversity candidates needed to win all five seats up for grabs to retake control of the Wake County Board of Elections. They won four outright. In District 3 diversity supporter and incumbent Kevin Hill got the most votes but did not avoid the 50 percent cutoff to avoid a runoff.
Campaign finance records show dedicated donors on both the Republican and Democrat sides are donating thousands of dollars to multiple campaigns in the race to see who will take control of the Wake County school board.
Billie Redmond claims her fundraising figures show she has the most widespread support but a Record analysis of campaign finance records shows she received almost half of her money from people with ties to development. Nancy McFarlane has the most donations of $50 or less. We talk to the candidates and take a look at what the numbers mean.

Both diversity and neighborhood schools supporters acknowledge the significant impact of PACs in the 2009 elections, but this year PACs have yet to give to school board candidates according to campaign finance reports recently filed with the county.
