Police shot a man after a standoff today in West Raleigh. Police say they heard what sounded like a gunshot outside of the RPD’s Southwest District Substation. Then a man armed with two guns ran into a nearby building, where he had a standoff with police for the next 90 minutes.
The standoff on Hutton Street, near the corner of Hillsborough Street and Blue Ridge Road ended when an officer shot the gunman, Justin Lamar Thomas, 26, according to police.
In a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Raleigh Police Chief Harry Dolan said Thomas went outside of the building several times and pointed a gun at officers and at himself. The last time Thomas left the building, Doland said, he pointed a gun at officers near the back door and an officer shot Thomas.
Dolan said Thomas sustained “non-life-threatening injuries” and was transferred to WakeMed.
The State Bureau of Investigations is looking into the incident, which is standard procedure when an officer is involved in a shooting.
