Picks of the Week (see full Calendar below)

Wednesday 3/16

Peter Lamb & The Wolves (Jazz) – Humble Pie – 9:30 p.m./$5 Cover (Free if you have dinner)
The Standard Bearers for Lounge Jazz in Raleigh.  Thankfully, they are back to playing their bi-monthly gig at the pie. Peter Lamb has been living music and more particularly, jazz, his entire life and is one of the major forces in jazz for the Triangle. Peter is masterful on the Sax and has surrounded himself with a wonderful group of musicians; Mark Wells on Keys and a most excellent vocalist, Dr. Strong on Trumpet, Bassist George Knott and Drummer Stephen Coffman round out the group. This is a definite MUST for jazz lovers in the area. Come early, have a wonderful dinner, stay late and dance with the band and enjoy whomever Peter has brought along to sit in. This is one of the true gems in our musical fabric.

Confetti Rhetoric Regiment (Funk/Hip-Hop/Experimental) – Pourhouse – 10 p.m./Cover $7
One of the more intriguing shows in the area this week.  This group has built a good following with their funky mix of music that covers Funk, Hip-Hop, Rock into a fusion that while unique, works and truly showcases the immense talent of these guys. It’s great grooving music that should draw a fairly decent and lively crowd. Check out the 18-minute clip of their performance on the link above.

Thursday 3/17

Zoogma w/ Kingator (Electronica/Jam/Experimental) – Pourhouse – 9 p.m. Show/$8 Cover
In a night overflowing with “Celtic” music and everyone claiming to be Irish (even though St. Patrick was actually a French Missionary), this show is an Oasis from the madness going on elsewhere.  Zoogma is an amazing group that is along the same lines of Pretty Lights & Archnemesis except they have an added twist – Rock.  It’s great stuff and high-energy so expect a lot of glowsticks and crazy dancing. It’s the perfect start to the weekend!  Kingator will open the evening with their version funk/jam. They are a great local representation of Jam band great Particle.

Old Habits (Folk/Bluegrass) – 42nd Street – 9 p.m./No Cover
Local Folk Band favorite Old Habits will light up 42nd St. for a great night of Folk/Bluegrass music.  Craig possesses a great talent for harmonization with his band mates as well as the stage presence to command your attention for long periods of time. Did I also mention that he plays a mean upright bass?  This is a true treat for anyone who enjoys folk/bluegrass.

Friday 3/18

The Ethnographers (Indie) – The Brewery – 9 p.m.
This Greenville-based indie band can wow you at the first song (such as Grandfather Said).  The vocals are simply superb and crystal clear, which is something that you don’t always get in this genre.  A great group with powerhouse vocals and solid instrumentation to back it up, it’s definitely worth checking out on a Friday night.  American Joy and Eureka California open, so expect a 10:30-11 start for Ethnographers.

The Shucks, Possum Jenkins (Americana/Roots/Folk) –  Deep South The Bar – 9 p.m./$12 Cover
Yet another Triangle delight, The Shucks are a great band for an easy going night (but can easily get you ramped up).  I’m not sure that I can exactly pinpoint this band as you get so much in their music.  From Honky Tonk, to Folk Rock to Americana, this band covers so much ground that before you know it, the set is over.  Crisp, clear vocals yet harmonization for the ballads — it’s a country siren.   This is a great group that is highly recommended for those of you with a honky tonk/folk itch to scratch. Triad based Folk/Souhern Rock specialists Possum Jenkins open the evening.

Big Daddy Love (Jam/Funk/Folk Rock) – Southland Ballroom – 9:30 p.m./$10 Cover
This Asheville-based jam band has developed a lively following here during the past few months.  If you are in mood for some jam with a side of Funk, this is the outing and band for you.

Saturday 3/19

Zegg (Jam) – The Big Easy – 10 p.m./No Cover
This Jam band features traces of funk, and these guys are stalwarts of the Raleigh scene.  Come check out their jam session which will feature both originals and covers for a rockin’ night.

Polvo, Wild Wild Geese, Free Electric State (Indie/Experimental) – Kings Barcade – 10 p.m./$10 Cover
Three local Indie groups are ready to blow the windows out of Kings.  Pay particular attention to Free Electric State because has they have a brand of Indie with a bit of Trance mixed in. They should be the final band of the evening so you will be ready to dance. The crowd will be lively and these groups will most certainly wow you with their talent – or, if you seen them before, will rock your night and get you into orbit while on your way to Neptunes for the after-party.

Sunday 3/20

8th Aniversary Neu Romance Party (Electronica/Dance) – Five Star – 9 p.m./No Cover
Come out on a Sunday and get your dance on with Chico’s group as they celebrate their 8th anniversary of this trailblazing event for Raleigh’s music scene.  DJs Castro, Madcow, Mark T and others will be spinning some great stuff.
