Picks of the Week (full Calendar below)

Wednesday 3/23

Forghorn String Band – Berkeley Cafe (Bluegrass) – 8 p.m./$10 Cover
Traditional, Old Timey Bluegrass … Nothing more needs to be said. This group is one of the best in the business in this style of bluegrass as evidenced by their international touring. Expect superb musicianship, mournful vocals of a lost time, and an excellent night of laid back, high-quality music.

Moon Duo, Arbor Myst – Kings Barcade (Indie) – 9 p.m./$10 Cover
These two great bands complement each other. San Francisco-based Moon Duo brings an incredibly complex indie/experimental musical style that was actually rooted in jazz greatness. Expect some solid, yet unique sounds and long riffs that allow you to lose yourself in the music. Local up-and-comers, Arbor Myst open the show.

Cinder Cat, Wax Planet – Southland Ballroom (Indie/Jam)-  9:30 p.m./$7 Cover
Cinder Cat is the latest in a long line of great indie/funk/experimental groups to come out of the Greenville, N.C. area. They have had a great journey finding their sound and you have the opportunity to enjoy the fruits of their labors. Their experimental funk/psychedelic music is so good, I would let it double for lounge music in Montreal. Local Funk/Fusion band Waxplanet opens the evening and are surely not to be missed as they are one of the better bands in this area within this genre.

Thursday 3/24

Eilen Jewell Band – Berkeley Cafe (Folk/Roots) – 8 p.m./$10 Cover
If you need a Folk/Roots fix at all this week, this is the show for you. With crisp, clear, powerful vocals, and some excellent guitars and backup instrumentation, Boston-based Eilen Jewell gives one heck of a performance. With no opener and two solid sets, we are in for a treat and likely some great improvisation.

Kingator – The Pourhouse (Jam/Rock/Funk) – 9 p.m./$8 Cover
Fresh off an amazing show last week at The Pourhouse, Kingator is back again this week with their version funk/jam – they are a great local representation of Jam band great Particle. Be sure to check out their encore performance of funk/jam fusion.

Local Beer Local Band Feat. I was Totally Destroying it & The Future is Me – Tir Na Nog (Indie) – 10 p.m./Free
LBLB is back after a one-week hiatus. Come check out this great gem of our grassroots music scene. This week features some great bands including I was Totally Destroying it. Be sure to listen for the “In a Big Country” 80s throwback cover or any of their most excellent U2 covers.

Scarlet Virginia brings their Indie/Folk sound to Brewmasters on Friday with Delta Rae. Photo courtesy of Scarlet Virginia & New Raleigh.

Friday 3/25

Delta Rae, Scarlet Virgina – Brewmasters (Gospel Pop/Indie Folk Pop) – 9 p.m./Cover TBA
Once again, Durham’s powerhouse group Delta Rae is back in Raleigh to wow us with their superb musical talents. This is a group that just keeps getting better with each show, and they are most certainly on their way to the big time. Don’t take my word for it; check out their two interviews on NPR, and their website as well as other publications. This is a show that is not to be missed! Raleigh’s Scarlet Virgina is also playing this same evening and it will certainly be a nice complement to Delta Rae. With a similar sound, it’s the singular voice that places more attention on the instrumentation, whereas Delta Rae is vocals heavy. It’s a nice contrast. This is most certainly the HOT pick for Friday!

Hot Damn Blues Band – Big Easy (Blues) – 10 p.m./Free
Come check out one of the better Blues bands in the area. As it is said, when these guys play, the party just follows. After having seen them multiple times, I kinda believe it. Come on out and enjoy some great Blues music.

American Joy, Ethnographers, Skyculture – Deep South (Indie Pop) – 9 p.m./$7 Cover
The Ethnographers can wow you at the first song (such as “Grandfather Said”). The vocals are simply superb and crystal clear, which is something that you don’t always get in this genre. A great group with powerhouse vocals and solid instrumentation to back it up. Definitely worth checking out on a Friday night! Be also sure to check out local indie rockers American Joy & SkyCulture.

Saturday 3/26
