Picks of the Week (full Calendar below)

Friday, 4/01

Ed Stephenson & The Paco Band – Meredith College (Guitar/Flamenco) 8 p.m./Free

A powerhouse group of musicians, these guys all get together to play a rarer genre of music for this area – and are very, very good at it.

Jeanne Jolly & Greg Humphries – Southland Ballroom (Folk/Country) 8 p.m./$10

Two dynamic voices team up to bring a great night of folk music. Prepare to be amazed by their wonderful harmonization and solid musicianship. This is a real treat – and a great idea for a night of music to start the weekend right!

The Mantras – The Pourhouse (Indie/psychedelic) 9:30 p.m./$10

This area is a treasure-trove of great bands that have that indie/jam/psychedelic bend to them. The Mantras are that the top of this list and have a devoted following that travel the Carolinas and Southeast for a great night of music. This night will be no different and you can expect a night of throw down. For those of you who are not so familiar with these guys, they have a sound that is similar to Particle, Big Something, or Kingator.

Saturday, 4/02

Cowboy Mouth w/ Hank Sinatra – Lincoln Theater (Rock/Alt) 8 p.m./$15

New Orleans based Cowboy Mouth has been to the top of the mountain, having hit songs and played to countless crowds nationally and internationally. As a growing sign of our spot on the music map, Raleigh has been able to secure a weekend booking for this great night of music. They bring a fresh style of music – not quite rock, not quite indie, not quite roots/Americana; their style is likely best categorized as Rock/Alt. Drawing on hip-hop, rock and folk influences, Cowboy Mouth puts together a sound that is rock-ish but has a modern, feel to it that can be off-color at times, but is entertaining all the time. As a perfect band to complement them for the evening, Hank Sinatra brings their quirky, indie sound to open the evening.

Veelee – Slims (Indie) 9 p.m./Cover TBA

Chapel Hill based indie rockers, Veelee made a huge splash last year at Hopscotch when they blew the crowd away during their gig at The Hive last year. Since then, they have been quite busy, releasing their 1st mini album, and playing several shows around the Carolinas. This is most certainly a solid night of music in the same vein as Sharon Van Etten or Mt. Moriah. Come check them out!

Doco, Funkuponya, Groovestain – The Pourhouse (Fusion/Funk/Rock/Reggae) 9:30 p.m./$10

Doco is releasing their new album and have asked their friends, Funkuponya & Groovestain to help out with the party. Expect a solid night of Rock/Jam/Funk and some sort of variation of all three. It will also not be out of the question to see a late night jam session including members of all three bands. This will be a solid night of music – come check it out!

Sunday, April 3

Jimmy Thackery & Friends – Southland Ballroom (Blues) 7 p.m./$12

Jimmy Thackery, Willard “Bullfrog” McGee and Tad Walters have a blues jam session that will astound and amaze. This is a great evening of Blues Jam that is not to be missed for anyone who loves the Blues. You can expect long solo riffs, with each trying to outdo the other – this will be pleasant on the ears and easy on the soul.
