The Raleigh Public Record is seeking qualified applicants for a part-time managing director.
Job Title: Managing Director — Raleigh Public Record (Raleigh, N.C.)
Position:
The Managing Director (Director) supports the mission and work of the Raleigh Public Record (www.raleighpublicrecord.org), an online nonprofit newspaper, by spearheading development efforts, overseeing business operations and serving as the public face of the organization during a critical period of growth. A new position in the organization, the Director will have the opportunity to create a fundraising and community outreach strategy that will shape the organization’s future.
The Director will report to the Raleigh Public Record’s volunteer Board of Directors and work on equal footing with the Record’s founding editor. The position will be part-time initially, with potential to become full-time.
The ability to understand and communicate the mission and work of the Record is essential. The Director will be the organization’s main point of contact with donors, sponsors, foundation funders and other community stakeholders. For this reason, the position requires impeccable judgment and enthusiasm for the importance of local, independent journalism in a democratic society. We are looking for someone passionate, motivated, and willing to make the ask.
The Managing Director will work from the Record’s Raleigh, N.C. office. The applicant must be available for evening and weekend work activities. Job duties will vary over time, but will include a combination of the following:
Fundraising and Outreach
- Develop and execute a strategic plan for fundraising and community outreach
- Oversee all areas of grant funding, including cultivating potential corporate and foundation funding sources, writing grant proposals, and managing reporting requirements for funders
- Work with the staff and board to leverage relationships to maximize fundraising potential
- Build and maintain a core group of supporters and small-dollar donors
- Generate and supervise fundraising appeals
- Oversee the work of staff, volunteers and board members in organizing and executing special fundraising events
- Track the impact of the Record’s news reporting and outreach efforts
- Represent the Record in public venues, professional organizations
- Identify best practices in the emerging field of nonprofit and hyperlocal journalism to inform the Record’s organizational development
Operations
- Maintain accurate accounting of all income and its sources
- Oversee Board-approved budget plan
- In collaboration with the Record’s editor, prepare budget proposals for Board approval
- Work with outside accountant on financial reporting and Form 990
Salary depends on experience. The Raleigh Public Record is a nonpartisan organization that strongly values diversity.
Qualifications:
- Outstanding written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
- Fundraising skills and experience
- Solid grasp of journalism ethics; experience in journalism a plus
- Comfort with public speaking
- Fluency with online and social media communication
- Ability to think strategically, demonstrating self-direction and self-discipline
- Ability to manage a budget; experience with QuickBooks or other budgeting software a plus
- Firm understanding of nonprofit rules and procedures
- College degree required; graduate degree a plus
Organization:
Founded in 2008, the Raleigh Public Record is a nonprofit online newspaper whose mission is to report and document the news of Raleigh, North Carolina. Through its website, the Record fairly and responsibly covers the issues affecting all Raleigh communities, using traditional pen-and-pad reporting as well as audio and visual storytelling. While reporting stories traditional media no longer cover, the Record also tests new ways to convey news and helps train a new generation of journalists.
The Record’s work is funded through grants from philanthropic foundations, sponsorships from local businesses, and contributions from members of the community. We publish online, but our approach to reporting is old-school. We uphold the standards of the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics. The Record is a member of the North Carolina Press Association and the N.C. Center for Nonprofits.
