Raleigh residents planning to travel on Hillsborough Street will have a difficult time starting next week.
Hillsborough Street will be closed between Concord Street and Friendly Drive. A portion of Friendly Drive will also be closed between Hillsborough Street and ME Valentine Drive.
The road closures are scheduled to begin on Thursday, Dec. 19 and will be completed no later than Jan. 5.
Mike Kennon, transportation services manager with the city’s Transportation Operations Division, said these dates were chosen because N.C. State will not be in session, lessening the impact to the public.
Kennon said the road closure is necessary to upgrade the existing water and sewer lines that will serve the new Stanhope Center.
The controversial Stanhope Center is planned for the entire block on Hillsborough Street between Friendly Drive and Concord Street, and will house both residential units and retail space.
Hillsborough Street will remain open on the west end up to Daisy Street until Christmas to allow residents access to area businesses.
Kennon said developer John Kane has committed to providing clear signage indicating that Hillsborough Street businesses will be open during construction.
