Incumbent Joe Bryan will be facing off against Democratic challenger Sig Hutchinson for his Wake County Commission seat in the Nov. 4 general election.
The current Republican representative for District 1 defeated challenger Fred Puryear Tuesday with more than 75 percent of the vote.
In an email to the Record prior to Election Day, Puryear said, “My comment, no matter what the outcome of the election results, is ‘the people have spoken.’”
Once the Knightdale mayor, Bryan has been a member of the Board of Commissioners since his election in 2002. Puryear works as a firefighter in Wilson, but has lived most of his life in Knightdale.
All four Republican seats are up for election in November, but only one was contested during the primary. Republicans currently control the Board; one lost seat could shift the balance of power.
Commissioners serve four-year terms. Although they must live in the district that they represent, they are elected at large by voters across the county.
In November, incumbents Phil Matthews, District 2, and Paul Coble, District 7, are facing off against challengers Matt Calabria and John Burns, respectively.
Newcomer Rich Gianni will be running against Democrat Jessica Holmes. In the meantime, Gianni has been appointed to the Wake Commission to sit for the rest of Tony Gurley’s term.
Gurley resigned earlier this year to take a job in Gov. Pat McCrory’s office.
