Fresh produce might be coming to Southeast Raleigh as city officials continue to try to woo a grocery store into the empty Kroger on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
Councilor Eugene Weeks this week requested $15,000 from the Council contingency fund to help set up a farmers market in the area that lost the grocery store earlier this year.
He said the nonprofit group Marrkens Development Center is working to establish a temporary farmers market that would provide fresh produce to local residents starting next month.
City Manager Russell Allen said that before he would approve the grant, he would like more information to ensure the group would make good on the city’s investment. Typically, he said, grant funding is given after the work has been completed.
City Councilors voted to let Allen take the lead on vetting and approving the grant and update the Council at a future meeting.
