On Monday, City Council approved a new budget – bringing with it a number of taxpayer-sponsored capital improvement projects. Somewhere among the $754 million in expenditures, the city found the money to fund a number of large-scale, long-awaited capital improvement projects.
The city will need to find an additional $6.5 million in order to build all of the elements associated with the proposed new downtown train station.
A fourth public information session about Union Station will take place Thursday.
As the city continues to work on the design for the new Union Station in the downtown Warehouse District, money coming in from state and federal sources will make the project a reality. But it’s not completely funded yet. City officials say they hope to stick to the $73 million budget for the station.
An updated Union Station master plan was presented to the Passenger Rail Task Force on Wednesday, and the total cost has grown to $73 million. The city currently has $30 million to complete phase 1A of the project.
On Wednesday architects unveiled the design for Raleigh’s planned Union Station in the warehouse district. The plans include retail, performance and outdoor space.
Councilors approved a rezoning for a mixed-use development near Crabtree Valley mall that will include a pedestrian bridge across Glenwood Avenue. In other Council business, the city received a $27 million loan for the Neuse River Waste Water Treatment Plant, and plans to apply for another federal grant for the new downtown train station.
A second information session about the planning and design of the future Raleigh Union Station will take place Wednesday at CAM Raleigh.
Councilors Tuesday approved a consultant for the transit station master planning process and a public hearing for a south Raleigh resurfacing project. In other news, Raleigh roosters are off the chopping block.
City Councilors Tuesday asked staff members to provide a report focusing on the employee grievance procedure, which includes the attendance policy for the Civil Service Commission. The Council also heard a report about the city’s BigBelly trash and recycling cans.
