New GoRaleigh Bus Shelter Designs on Display at CAM Raleigh; Public Can Vote on Favorite Design

The City of Raleigh, the Raleigh Transit Authority and ACTIVATE Triangle have engaged the local architectural community in a design competition to create a new bus shelter design for the GoRaleigh transit system. With the planned expansion of the GoRaleigh system under the newly approved Wake County Transit Plan the GoRaleigh system seeks to project a positive and uplifting image of public transportation to the public. The goals of the new design are:

  • Expand the new GoRaleigh branding currently on the buses to bus stops and bus shelters.
  • Elevate the experience for riders through improved safety, convenience and comfort.
  • Improve the overall image and aesthetics of the GoRaleigh system.’
  • Attract more choice riders and improve overall ridership.

From the competition entries three designs were selected as finalists. The design teams for the three final designs were from these American Institute of Architects (AIA) Triangle firms:

  • ClarkNexsen, Raleigh
  • LS3P, Raleigh
  • Perkins+Will, RTP

The three selected teams were required to construct and install a full-size prototype of their design as the basis for selecting the ultimate winner. These prototypes are currently on display at the Contemporary Art Museum (CAM) at 409 W. Martin St. Downtown until Nov. 21. Members of the public, GoRaleigh riders, and the media are encouraged to come and see all three prototypes, provide comments and vote on their favorite design. Voting can also be done online at raleighnc.gov vote today!

CAM Raleigh invites everyone to come by the museum to see the prototypes after the Downtown Raleigh Christmas Parade on Saturday, Nov. 19 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. A dedication ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m.

The winning design will be selected by a jury of architects and transit officials, taking public input into account. The winning design will be replicated at selected GoRaleigh bus stops that qualify for bus shelters in the future. In addition, all three prototypes will be installed at bus stops at locations throughout Raleigh.

ACTIVATE Triangle is an outreach initiative of AIA North Carolina to strengthen the civic role of architecture and design in our community.
