Forest for the Chairs

On the grounds of  the North Carolina Museum of Art, Penland, N.C. artist Tom Shields created Forest for the Chairs. In a grove of trees Shields transforms discarded chairs “into anthropomorphic furniture and sculpture.” The chairs are positioned in a variety of angles among the trees.

In this 2013 work of art, the chairs are grafted to the trees and over time the they will decay and fall apart, completing the natural cycle.
