Dear readers,
Journalism is changing – in some ways for the better, in other ways for the worse. Today I’d like to share with you one small development in that larger change that signals hope that we can hold on to the media institutions we need while adapting to the new realities of readership: The Raleigh Public Record is now a member of the North Carolina Press Association.
When residents pointed out that a century-old family cemetery would be disturbed to make room for the new four-lane road project on Leesville Road, the city council sent the plans back to the Public Works committee to find a compromise.
Mapping conducted by the Record shows that nearly all schools to the East of downtown Raleigh are high-poverty schools. It further shows a clear trend of mid-range schools in the middle and wealthier schools to the west.
Wake County schools released new data this week about who participated in the first round of school choice. So far, most people who have participated at the kindergarten level received their first or second choice, but roughly 3,000 families still haven’t participated.
Raleigh Councilors Tuesday endorsed commuter rail station locations, approved a WalkRaleigh program and decided to make taking recycling cans a crime.

As part of the the fourth annual 2012 St. Paddy’s Run Green this weekend, 2,400 runners ran through downtown Raleigh. The five mile race gave folks an opportunity to show off their finest green duds.
