An updated Union Station master plan was presented to the Passenger Rail Task Force on Wednesday, and the total cost has grown to $73 million. The city currently has $30 million to complete phase 1A of the project.
A pedestrian bridge connecting a Salisbury Street parking deck to the lower end of Halifax Mall is under construction on North Salisbury Street. A previous concrete bridge was out of use since 2008 because of disrepair. The new design will include steel and aluminum panels.
On Wednesday architects unveiled the design for Raleigh’s planned Union Station in the warehouse district. The plans include retail, performance and outdoor space.
Raleigh was once ranked as one of the top 10 dangerous cities for walking, but city leaders are working to encourage safe biking and walking conditions through four main objectives.

A bill in the House and a companion provision in the Senate budget could eliminate state funding for bicycle and pedestrian projects. HB 817 replaces the equity formula, which has been in place since the 1980s, said Raleigh’s Transportation Manager Eric Lamb. The original formula distributed money in equal parts across the state — regardless of traffic or population.
City Council members Tuesday approved the Life Time Fitness project planned for the Falls Lake watershed this week. Councilors also got an update on the Union Station plan and the Upper Neuse Clean Water Initiative.
Councilors approved a rezoning for a mixed-use development near Crabtree Valley mall that will include a pedestrian bridge across Glenwood Avenue. In other Council business, the city received a $27 million loan for the Neuse River Waste Water Treatment Plant, and plans to apply for another federal grant for the new downtown train station.
