On March 3, as it does on first Sunday of every month, the Sacred Heart Cathedral Catholic Church in downtown Raleigh holds a traditional, Extraordinary Form Mass. Formally known as the Tridentine Mass, the liturgy is celebrated in Latin in accordance with rites established in 1570. Largely phased out after 1962, when Latin was removed as the official liturgical language, former Pope Benedict XVI in 2007 issued a decree encouraging more masses to be performed in this manner.

Downtown Raleigh’s Sacred Heart Cathedral has been offering the mass on the first Sunday of every month since 2007.
