As posted by the Raleigh Connoisseur on August 21st: I’m sure as most of you know, the era of little credit is upon us and recently it has affected the start of construction at Charter Square. The Raleigh City Council has given the developers an extension and ideas are being thrown around for temporary uses for the area on top of the concrete foundation. From the linked article in the N&O, some ideas are for an ice rink or for artificial turf to be laid across the concrete. Temporary use of the area while we wait for the economy to strengthen is a great idea because we have the flexibility to try new things. If they work, it can be moved to something more permanent. If not, it will result in only a small loss and good proof that the idea does not work in downtown. Here are some other inexpensive ideas that could be worth looking into while we have a fluid space before the towers are built. Click to read more . . .
Raleigh, NC -101 Lounge + Café has released the schedule for Politics 101, a series geared towards local politics and the candidates involved in the 2009 election cycle for Raleigh. The series is composed of informal information sessions hosted by candidates that will be held throughout the month of September. All candidates for city council and mayoral races were invited to host an event for downtown residents and workers that are open to the public. “Raleigh has become very politically active and 101 is excited by the response from our elected officials and candidates for this series.” Says Jen Heasty, Event Coordinator for 101 Lounge + Cafe. “101 supports the diversity of the voters and embraces planning events to help educate and bring downtowners together in an informal, relaxed atmosphere.”
During the September series, each candidate is provided a 2-hour block in 101’s upstairs lounge to be used however the candidate desires. Some candidates have chosen to speak on specific topics, while others are planning to use the time to relax and answer questions that WakeCounty voters would like addressed.

My adage is that every room needs a focal point. That includes outdoor space.
While we do enjoy the city views from our terrace, what really entertains us as we drink our coffee each morning is the sparrows who tussle on the perches of our feeder like teenaged girls fighting for mirror space in the school bathroom.

We notice how the female cardinal seems braver than the male, as she shoulders her way to the feed; and I like the mourning doves whose calling reminds me of waking in my childhood bedroom.
Though we lived in the suburbs for many years, it took living in a fourth floor condo for me to fall in love with birds.
How to do it without a mess?
I recommend the wrought iron arms (available at Logans and Wild Birds Unlimited) that you can easily attach to your railings, allowing you to extend your feeder outward from your porch. We also like our birdbath that adds interest to a corner of our porch, though it seems to provide more of a drinking trough than bath.
To our friends who ask if we don’t miss nature living in a downtown setting, we say, No. We’re closer now than ever.
Always coming and going, entertaining us with their antics, these birds are our favorite focal point.
I live in Glenwood South and was presented with a great question. Where are good places to walk our canine friends? Please blog your suggestions for all downtown residents to share.
