The Downtown Raleigh Alliance (DRA) is holding its Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony on Feb 16th starting at 5:30pm, followed by an after-party from 8 pm to 9 pm.

After many months of construction, the former Natty Greene space has been transformed into a destination that leaps right over the expectations of sports enthusiasts, foodies and families. Consider it like a cruise ship. There’s space for kids to enjoy a full range arcade, while fans and alumni cheer for their favorite teams and still others retreat upstairs to a quiet mezzanine area, where they can savor desserts like Hummingbird Cake.
Sports fans will love the theater sized TV screen that truly is the next best thing to being in the stadium. Actually this is better, thanks to a long list of craft beers and brewery on site. Match this with nachos, sandwiches and burgers all made from scratch with local ingredients served by a friendly staff, and you have a perfect party.
For those coming for the food and casual, spacious atmosphere, you’ll be surprised at the wide and innovative offerings of Chef Ryan Foxworth. At the soft opening, diners sampled from a range that began with Fried Green Tomatoes served with local goat cheese and peppadew pepper vinaigrette (a favorite!), NC Prosciutto and Pimento Cheese Bruschetta, and crab-in-every-bite Blue Devil Sherry Crab Bisque, leading into entrees that included Black Eyed Pea Cakes, Jambalaya and Grilled Salmon on mashed potatoes with sautéed greens and tomato-basil relish. Agreement at our table was delight that the price point allowed for this to be a weeknight indulgence, providing a healthy, creative, and widely varied menu inviting many happy returns.

The wait is over. On September 2, Pharmacy Market will be swinging open its doors to a 7 day a week full service pharmacy, groceries and produce, freshly made sandwiches, household staples and beauty items, as well as a range of beer and wine. Twenty parking places will be available off North Street, free for 30 minutes, and you can have a seat on the covered sidewalk terrace to watch people go by as you wait for your prescription to be filled.
For Tony Gurley, a long time pharmacist in Raleigh, who bought land for his Blue Ridge Pharmacy across from REX Hospital from Joe Myer of Blue Ridge Realty back in 1985, the opportunity to move into Glenwood South was too good to pass up. As a Wake County Commissioner and having worked a year in the governor’s budget office, Tony had his ear to the ground. And he heard again and again of the need for amenities for downtown residents who want to walk to pick up what they need at the end of a busy day.
A pharmacy AND a market? Tony’s inspiration was the European model, where workers drop by a location near their neighborhood transit stop to purchase what’s needed for supper, and in the process can also get the odd paper good, beauty product or prescription. He also thinks of the Walgreens at Times Square. For Glenwood South, this officially turns us into the urban style neighborhood that many of us have long awaited.
This aerial visualization of the new Capital Boulevard Bridge replacements was posted by the Raleigh Connoisseur Blog yesterday. We’ve taken a screen shot from the video and posted it here and included an overlay showing the location of the recently announced development projects.
It’s easy to see from this view how the new bridge ramps and associated changes to the area’s street grid have already become a catalyst for redevelopment of this previously neglected area.
